VZ 58 vs Mini-14/30

Fixed it for yea ;)

Here is an interesting and revealing comparison: http://www.chuckhawks.com/compared_AR-15_Mini-14.htm

Note that after several sessions: "In its stand alone review, the Mini-14 achieved an average 50 yard group size of 1.66" @ 50m with the same ammunition at the same rifle range. The average group size from both range sessions with the Mini-14 would be 1.75". We'd say there was nothing to choose in accuracy between our AR-15 and Mini-14 test rifles. Actually, both performed better than expected."

"...firing surplus ammo than the mini 30..." Used to be that Ruger made Mini-30's with a .308" barrel. Surplus ammo, even though most of it isn't, uses a .311" bullet. In any case, the Ruger is an inaccurate, over priced, rifle that generally gets purchased by our Southern cousins because it's made Stateside.
"...took a moose with..." 7.62 x 39 is too light. Despite daddy's kill.

Ruger Mini 14/30: The rifle gets Wendy and Ron throthing at the chops with anti-ecstasy

VZ.58: Media believes it to be an AK47 with "banana clips"

It's a win either way.

That's about the accuracy my friends Mini 14 gets at 50m. But that grouping turns into 3 - 4" at 100m. Its accurate enough for what he wants it for.

The mini 14's and mini 30's I have owned over the years have shot everything that I have fed them. I have never had one jam. Accuracy is so, so in some of them. Every so often you will get one that really shoots well. I had a Har-Bar on one and it shot incredibly well. VZ 58's? Just cool guns no matter how you look at them. Shoot quite accurately and very reliable too. Can't go wrong with either.

With the hoopla over the cz 858 (can the vz 58 be far behind?), maybe the mini is now a better choice, if you can find one. The magazines are even harder to find then the rifles. Although, like a previous poster has already stated, the mini is just as despised by anti's in this country. While in the USA, the mini is considered a politically correct choice in its wood stock because it looks like a hunting rifle.

My 187 series mini printed shotgun patterns @ 100 yds. The first 3 rds were usually 4-5" then it went to s**t. If you let it cool for 10 minutes after every 3 rds it shoots at least as good as a kid throwing rocks. Warm it up and it hits everything around the target very reliably. Bedding cut groups down to 3" and I could fire at a deliberate pace and keep it that tight. Reliability was exceptional. One FTF when the mag wasn't seated properly. Zero other issues. Brass is ejected @ 2000 fps and can be used to kill small game if you aim it right. Disassembly is not as quick and easy as the VZ but its not hard either. The action keeps pretty clean and will last long intervals without cleaning. The VZ is faster and easier to disassemble and clean. With surplus ammo the VZ can hold 3-4" @ 100 yds. Hand loads or the right factory load can cut that in half. Mags for the VZ are way cheaper and vastly more available than mini mags.

You're kidding right? The mini has been in their cross hairs since 1989 when a certain woman hater took one to a university in Quebec and rewrote history....
