The cz is easier to load with 5 round magazines for multiple shots: you can charge multiple magazines with stripper clips prior to shooting, and the rifle offers better upgrades for a better handling rifle.

You can use 10 round pistol magazines in both the .223 and 7.62x39 versions of the VZ58, but they will require the cost and installation of the magwell adapter necessary for either caliber and of course the cost of the 10 round magazines.
Once the adapter is installed, you can't use the original 5/30 magazines unless the adapter is removed.
The .223 version is around $90(?) and the x39 version is around $200(?) and only accepts the XCR pistol magazines.
I very well may be incorrect with said pricing, but check out Wolverine Supplies for more information on both magwel adaptors.

I really don't think you can make a valid argument that the sks is more reliable than the vz-58.
Drive over it with a truck and we'll see...
I was at a CQ course, and a (brave) guy had an SKS, which performed perfect, as they always do, and a guy with aVZ, which had nothing but problems. I realize that's not a lot to base an opinion on, just what occurred to me when I read this thread.

I've shot sks's that ftf and have issues with every magazine. Individual examples mean nothing. You have to look at the long term track record and over all design. When you bring in other factors like user error and maintenance, looking at one example is totally worthless.

The sks is obsolete the vz can be upgraded to a modern configuration but the type 97 is better than both of them

No, he doesn't. Aside from the fact that it's a red herring, a vz will survive getting run over by a truck as well as any other assault rifle. The vz series has a long standing reputation for excellent reliability. Theoretical talk about running them over with trucks adds nothing to any practical discussion on the merits of the platform to Canadian gun owners.

wut? I was making a point that the surplus rifles are sturdier than the vz58.
You can't have 10 rounds in the SKS either and a 10 round mag cut off at 5 is just as lame a 5/30 mag. An SVT40 is similar in function whereas the VZ is not, it's a different animal all together with way more options available for it. Buy an AR15 if the VZ isn't your cup of tea, it's even better.
The VZ is far superior to the SKS. You should get the .223 and the mag adapter and use the AR or LAR mags. I have a CSA .223 sporter 19". Personally if I was in your shoes, I'd wait for Wolverine to start selling the new CZ version. That gun looks pretty awesome.

10 round pistol magazines are available that fit the vz58. They don't need to be pinned when used in a rifle instead of a pistol.
Edit: They fit when a magwell adaptor has been installed.
I'm fully aware, I was comparing the two in out of the box form.
I have two SKS's and one zv.58.... As soon as my vz was in my hands the SKS's became instant safe queens. I will always keep my SKS as every Canadian should have one. The VZ, is so light compared to the SKS, has a short stroke piston which means as a semi you can shoot it faster, much easier to clean after corrosive ammo as there is no gas tube to worry about, Inserting the mag with bolt closed is qucker and easier function. My SKS stripper clips run like a dream in it. Last but not least, everyone tries to make thier SKS's look like an AK, Tapco knows this and thats why they sell so much crap thats not needed; VZ.58 is everything an AK is plus more (yes I know they operate differently hense the "more"

Pretty simple, really. The VZ is a +4 assault rig that transforms its operator into a ninja commando. It has infinite ammunition and can destroy anything in its path. The SKS is an ancient, wood-bearing tool from another era that makes you look like a sissy.
But actually, both are awesome. The VZ of course is slicker. But the SKS has that badass Soviet Russia thing going for it.
