Hey nutz,

Just got some wooden furniture (2 set) for my VZ one is a lighter color and one is darker.

To get them to fit with the hardware I have, I had to shave down the wood where the butt plate fits on and where the metal cup fits on the fore end between the wood and receiver. So now there is some unfinished and unprotected wood. As well the lower hand guard seem to be raw wood on the inside, and with the washing after the corrosive ammo water is bound to get in there.

So what would you all recommend to refinish/protect the wood. I would like to keep the nice wood look. I think they are varnished but its hard to tell (read as I don't know how to tell), and the wood where I used a file to do the fitting is quite a bit lighter than the finish on the stock.

Can post pics if you need..

Thanks in advance.

So stripped with Circa 1850 this weekend, and if anyone wants to know the varnish is colored with some sort of stain so once that is removed you are left with a nice piece of walnut under it. Sanded a little with 220 to knock down some spots that had a little extra color remaining in them. And then used 400 till nice and smooth, wet with water to raise the grain, let it dry, sanded again with 400 grit. Just have to decide how to finish it now. And thinking of doing walnut stain and BLO on the outside and on the inside of the lower hand guard a few layers of varathane to keep any water out from when i wash the gas system with boiling water.

Anyone know how to get the wood apart from the metal upper hand guard?? Otherwise I am going to use alot of tape/poly plastic and be extra careful when stripping it.

TIA

i did the same this last weekend, strip all the woods with circa 1850 and applied 3 coats with glossy "polyshades" , stain & polyurethane in 1 , looks great.

Here is where I am at so far

But I still don't understand how to get the wood out of the top handguard. This is what mine looks like.

This is the inside where you can see the tabs that would seem to stop me from rotating it out.

Thanks

Ok got the upper hand guard off stripped and sanded the hand guard today. Then made sure everything fit nice.

Stained with some antique walnut oil stain that my dad gave me that his dad used to use on gun stocks.

And if you look close I found a use for the liberal propaganda shoved under my door.

So to finish I have allot of BLO and it gives the best look I think. But don't want it to smoke under rapid fire. Also wanted to "waterproof" as best possible the inside of the lower hand gaurd for when washing with boiling water. So was thinking BLO on the outside and get some varathane in a spray for inside the hand guard?

The tru-oil sounds like a good product but I am not sure where I can get it from. Anyone know a good place in Edmonton?
