vz-58L: Am I over reacting?

Hate to revive a dead topic, but since I am looking for one of these, non restricted ones that is, how meaningful is the difference between the chromed and non chromed barrels? I understand that corrosive ammo affects them but I am not 100% how it affects them and how badly. I've done some fairly serious digging in the forum but havent found anything that clearly explains that.

if you clean it properly after every shoot then there isnt much of a difference, non-chrome may take a bit more cleaning in the bore but im lazy , i need not have a completely clean patch .

chrome last longer, more durable but i heard it is less accurate, i have never put it to the test , i wish someone with both barrels do that test for us.

so far im very happy with my cz858.

The receiver on my '58 wasn't properly machined in the feed area, and would jam on almost every round. A few minutes spent with a diamond grinding bit on a Dremmel tool, followed by mirror-polishing the feed surfaces (left and right), and it cycles perfectly. I had to move the front sight post all the way to one side to get it zeroed at 100 yards, and that bugs me a little, though.

really? what model? vz58L or cz858 ? maybe your rear sight is faulty (i would check that) or your barrel is badly index.

well that makes me less concerned about which one I get, I tend to clean them fairly well regardless. And Marstar says its a 2 month wait for more 58L's. That and I have no idea how much more they want for it over the 858.

marstar is good about holding the price , what ever they sold them for late last year, i dont recall but i think it was $600- 650 ... have said that , they are not very timely with their delivery date , 2 months could end up being 6 months or more.

That runs 1000% contrary to my experience. Have you rapid fired any strings yet? Once the barrel really heats up is when these 858's really take a huge dump all over themselves in my experience.

I guess you should get a new 858 then. The one I snagged last year has given me nothing but glory when I give it a workout.

The 858 worked and fed like crap and the paint kept bubbbling and flaking off. It was NOT military grade epozy paint like the originals have.

i have a cz858 and i dont know if the paint on the mag is the same paint on the barrel , however , i needed to shorten the mag to a 5/12 and i had to bend the bottom edges for the bottom plate but found the metal too brittle and it snapped most of the time so i heated it on the stove high heat for a minute , with the edge touching the red hot element and the paint did not bubble , i was surprised.

I would hold out for the chrome barrel if I were you. They outlast a non chrome by 10x, more if you shoot corrosive and don't clean every time.

I'd love to get a chromed 58L but I also want to shoot something this year and I dont rifle shoot in the winter.

Mine came looking newer than new. If it was surplus parts then someone did a darn good job on it. Whoever your supplier is, tell them they have one more try before you cut all contact and dump a $hit load of money on their main competitor.

CURTTON;
Did I miss something here ?? How do we know Marstar Imported it ??
If not satisfied (if Marstar's) why not ship it back to us ??

CLAVEN2;
DAMMIT I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY TIMES WE ARE GOING TO SAY THIS, The VZ-58 and it's related family, ours or other importers, ARE NOT "converted" they were built as semi automatic rifles.

yes, you did miss something here, john you gotta learn to use the quote button or i dont know what you are talking about.

going back to your questions , i know you imported vz58L cos i saw it on your site and many threads by members saying so.

i cant be satisfied with marstar and i cant ship it back cos i dont own a vz58/vz58L , unless you and wolverine have some sort of a joint venture going, i own a wolverine cz858 so again i dont know what you are referring to.

Curtton - I did handle/inspect the 858's, what turns me off is the lack of warranty at Lever (and that they wanted 700$ ? for a new Norinco, again no warranty), and yes I would pay for shipping because of Marstars SERVICE, and if I need to send it back for whatever reason I don't have to pay extra for return shipping. As for Reliable, well what can I say, they are reliable :) They are one of the few stores I like to go to. :)
I agree on most poiints here. Lever is poor on deals(and customer appreciation), but, I did get good service with a bum sks exchange. Marstar is good as their word, with good service. Reliable is the friendliest in Vancouver, and I give them business too.
I don't own any of the above, but I can see that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I don't think there is a unanamous consensus on which is better. I've seen curtons and it's in great shape and shoots well. I figure if you're shooting dirty cheap ammo you should clean vigorously anyways so chrome or not wouldn't be an issue. Personnaly, I'd go non restricted out of principle. I have to say the sights are hard for me, and similar to the picture I have with the sks(spoiled by peeps)

you are such a rebel P, :D:D

you wont recognize my cz858 the next time you see it. i also got a posp scope for it (yet to mount it).

There has been a lot of attention around the vz-58 and it seemed like a good buy, so I took the plunge and ordered the non-restricted version. It came scratched to hell, the dust cover was too lose, the paint job sucked,the muzzle crown and butt plate looked used and the bayonet wouldn't lock on. I sent it back for a new one. It came today.

Slightly less scratched, broken top hand guard, warped bottom hand guard, unusable cleaning kit, broken knob on bayonet sheath strap and worse paint job.

I don't have a lot of experience buying these kind of rifles, but I have shot a few nice ones, so I know they exist. So, am I over reacting? Are these problems typical for this kind of rifle or am I cursed?:confused::(:mad:

Wow Sounds like the exact VZ I bought off marstar :D Mine did not even fire, I had to send it in and get a new one.. paint was scratched up as hell, bayonet never hooked on finely,... dust cover was blown off.. list goes on.. :welcome:
