vz-58L: Am I over reacting?

zero problems to report with the 858. i haven't done any real sustained rapid fire with it though.

i've put something less than a thousand rounds through it. had it out on some rainy day deer hunts as well.

example of one though, take it for what it is worth.

No problems with my CZ858 either. There is a *little* bit of rust in the bore, but I haven't seen any effect. Been putting off getting that .30 cal bore brush for over a year now :p

LORD - here we go again.

VZ58S' are NOT NEWLY MADE. They are made entirely out of SURPLUS parts on a Receiver that was never assembled into a rifle by CZ Hermex, but WAS banged around the factory in storage for 40 years before being converted to a semi-only receiver with the sear slots welded up and assembled with used military grade parts. They NEVER look new. the finish is ALWAYS scratched. The muzzles have honest wear and CANNOT be recrowned because they are CHROMED.

A cracked handguard, however, is NOT typical. I would return any rifle I got that way. Also, you will likely find rusted metal shavings in the receiver left over from the conversion. If you detail strip and clean the rifle, generally you will find the internals are in great shap. The rust is only the metal shavings which flash-rusted due to the hear of welding and grinding when it was converted to semi.

NOW,

The VZ858 is also made of surplus parts, but has a new manufacture non-cromed barrel. They are not cleaned up, but they ARE bead blasted and re-painted by CZ. The big problems here are that the barrel is NOT as durable as a military chromed barrel and the paint used is NOT as durable as the original military paint. Half the guns I see at the range (858's) show signs of bubbling paint on the barrel and paint flaked off the gun where the bleed holes are on the gas block.

The 858's are prettier out of the box, but are sometimes known for feed problems where the bolt won't lock back or recock the gun (converted differently than the 58S' are). Also, the paint doesn;t stay pretty long on these.

Conclusion?

IMHO you're better off with a CZ Hermex made gun. I've had both and the only one I kept was my restricted VZ58S. The 858 worked and fed like crap and the paint kept bubbbling and flaking off. It was NOT military grade epozy paint like the originals have. My VZ58S has scratched and chipped used surplus parts, but runs like a champ and the finish doesn't get any worse because I don;t beat it up in the field like the Czech military did before they surplused the parts on my gun. Also the crome bore cleans up in about 30 seconds while the 858 was a B!TCH to clean.

I have not had an 858L yet, but I understand they are just VZ58S' with a (longer) light machine gun variant barrel fitted and adapted to work.

Too many guys ar buying these thinking they are new. this is the WRONG perception to have. They are MILITARY SURPLUS RIFLES. They are NOT new and you should not expect them to be. In fact, I prefer that they are surplus. It's the only commie surplus rifle in this class that we can still own!

thanks for clearing that up for us :)

I like my 58L even more now :D

Mine was from Marstar and the finish was bad (scratches, etc), it looks like it was painted with a spray can. But i didn't expect anything better from a Eastern european rifle.

the Czech's are actually quite obsessive about firearms quality.

and again, my 858 is representative of their quality, not yours.

This post just settled it for me, I am going with the 58L from MARSTAR! Lever in Vancouver where I live would not warranty their 858's saying they were milsurp/used. They also said the same thing about a NEW 'rinco m14 I looked at. Anyone else have this experience or is it just me? I still buy ammo and such from them but after those experiences I don't think I would get a gun from them, even new. And the only affiliation I have with Marstar is as a satisfied customer :)

I had a problem with my first 858, it went back for warranty repairs. My second one runs like a top. when I got my first one back, i thought it would just crap out on me again. so I said #### it, and ran as many rounds downrange as i could as fast as I could, over 1000 rounds(which still goes fairly quick when using stripper clips)

The thing got damned hot, melted my gun case on the barrel and the lower handguard was showing signs of heat damage. Not one FTF, FTE anything. I was shooting like crazy, and still hitting the gong at 200m consistently. the thing just plain works. Sure, no chrome bore, but my paint is holding up fine. it's my beater 858, and goes where I go when out of the city.

I really love my VZ-58S. The dings and paint rubs give it character, and she shoots like a champ. I've run over 1000 rounds of Czech surplus through her and she's never missed a beat. I just wish we could have un-neutered mags! I'd love to pound 30 rounds straight through, hehehehe...

Cheers!

you rather pay shipping , wait and wonder what you gonna get, than handle, inspect , pay and drive away with it?

may i suggest going to reliable guns , i spoke to them last week and they said they have both the cz858 and vz58L in stock, so go check and compare yourself and tell us what you find.

Hey twoguntim,

I don't think you are over reacting. I had exactly the same issues with my V58L but Mastar gave me a full refund without hassle. I also found tons of metal shavings in the receiver which made the slide stick. My CZ858 has much better fit and finish and a smoother action. Being able to compare the two side by side helped me make my clear decision on which one to keep.

My CZ858 has run flawlessly for me. It's eaten everything I've fed it including soft point ammo (i haven't run too much through it, just too expensive) without a hitch. I've had it pretty hot ;) and no problems thus far. Haven't had any paint bubbles. Yeah, cleaning is a ##### but what are you gonna do.

In the future I'd like to pick up a restricted version just for ease of blasting commie ammo at the range. Besides, they look badass when they are modified.

For the record, marstar told me that the guns are made of all new parts when I pointed out that some of the parts looked used. My second gun has gone back for exchange, on the condition that someone actually inspect the next one before they ship it to me. It was also implied that my standard was too high.

It will probably be weeks before I know if my money has been refunded or if they manage (or bother) to find a good one that won't make me sick to my stomach when I open the case.

thanks for your help

Did you talk directly to John? He is a pretty reasonable guy. I hope everything gets squared away for you.

Keep us posted eh?

if i were them i would go out of my way to hand pick the best for you, to make up for what you were put thru twice before.

Curtton - I did handle/inspect the 858's, what turns me off is the lack of warranty at Lever (and that they wanted 700$ ? for a new Norinco, again no warranty), and yes I would pay for shipping because of Marstars SERVICE, and if I need to send it back for whatever reason I don't have to pay extra for return shipping. As for Reliable, well what can I say, they are reliable :) They are one of the few stores I like to go to. They have answered my questions and helped me to the best of their ability without trying to make me feel stupid for not falling from the womb with a head full of gun knowledge. That is more than I can say for some stores I have been to, they don't get the fact that when I walk out I take my money with me, never to return. I guess there are so many gun enthusiasists/users out there that they can turn away business. I didn't know Reliable had both the 858's and 58L's but I didn't look to close since I am pretty much set on ordering from Marstar (I like to stick to the winners and they have been good to me). However I might just have to take a drive down to Reliable and see what they can do, I wouldn't mind giving them my business either :)

I bought my 858 from Elwood Epps and it looked brand new, and I mean perfect. Butt, hand guards, paint, barrel even the EIS (extra infantry sh*t) looked good. Don't settle for that. Simply not acceptable!

me too me too

I dont get these folks saying they "always look a bit crappy"

ive never seen a bad one. and the one I bought is pristine.
