VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

BTW i love the marstar tac vest that fits the ak/cz/vz mags.

I'll send them an email and check it out. May be I'll buy a few more mags too for the 858. I guess this rifle got a good momentum here in Canada. At least that's how it looks from this discussion board. Well the fact that jamming is very rare, cleaning isn't as necessary as with certain other rifles, the weight is considerably less than that of an AK and it can function in a colder climate, I really like it.

Thanks for the directions for the pouches and merry Christmas to all.

I would agree with most of that, but people say 858s do indeed need a good cleaning. 58s have a chrome lined bore, 858s do not by all indications. So, do clean it well as surplus ammo tends to be corrosive. I never really thought about it but in the old days I shot an AK and left it a week and saw rust all around the gas port area and inside the gas tube.

The 858's do indeed need a thorough cleaning after shooting the czech surplus ammunition. After I got home from the range one day I sprayed windex down the barrel, swabbed it out and then sprayed some G96 Complete Gun Treatment down the barrel and in the receiver. One week later I found rust on a leaf spring and next to a coil spring in the receiver. Needless to say I had the boiling water down the barrel and into the receiver lickety split.
The smell of the rounds reminds me of my boys cap pistols and I am sure the primer of the corrosive ammo contains the same salts as the cap pistol caps.

The 858 is not as impervious to corrosion as the 58. I wonder if anyone makes 858 chrome-lined barrels.

By the way Norseman, I think the mag pouches are great. I was only teasing.
