VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

    Votes: 1,507 70.4%
  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

    Votes: 407 19.0%
  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

    Votes: 166 7.7%
  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Wow this thread never ends! I'm trying to get one of these rifles now....Seems like people are happy with them so far. I fired 5 shots through one at the range, and liked it.

(just adding my post to this massive thread).

Please pardon my ignorance, but what it is that people are shooting through these 40mm launchers attached to their CZs? Did Kim Campbell and the liberals somehow overlook putting M203's and their ammo on the prohib list when they banned everything potentially mean looking? Where can one get these launchers and what purposes do they serve on a civvy rifle other than looking cool?

Curious and Interested....

You can shoot any 12ga cartridge in them with an aluminum adapter similar to the one you see me using in my video (the one in the video is a custom 40mm to 1" adapter, with W209 shotgun primer).
You can then also shoot the 12ga, 15mm explosive "Bear Banger" cartridges out of it (which are my favourite). In my video, i'm shooting 1" dia by 2" length oak dowel painted red (not that you can see it for the fireball, smoke, and plus it's goin damn fast) on top of 130 grains of FFFFg black powder.
And lastly, you can use the (fiberglass?) practice hulls that use a .38s&w blank for power. You can then fire anything 1.5" in diameter (like chalk rounds, the blue plastic inert projectiles, etc).

Thought I'd save the forum from yet another short thread. I have two questions about the non-restricted 858.
One) What does adding a folding stock do to OAL on the non restricted rifle? Is it still non-restricted with that stock, or do I have to stick with the glue-wood to take one into the woods?
Two) Has anyone extended or made a longer barrel for an 858 to make an SVD lookalike? would it be a cut and dried case of copying everything the same and just extending the barrel, or would the gas port need to be moved etc etc etc?

A) adding a folder to an 858 does not change its non-res status, because it does not reduce the lenght below 660mm.

B) it is possible, but it's a #####.
first, to simply replace the barrel is a hard enough operation, it has to be done by an experienced gunsmith;
second, if the new barrel is considerably longer, the gas system has to be recalibrated (smaller channel diameter) to reduce the free volume of gas entering the system, otherwise it will damage the gun.

My advice is leave the barrel as it is.
Check vz58.net, they have a Dragunov look alike stock.
You can find on e-bay a whole bunch of russian scopes.

I don't intend to challenge your advice but,... why would the it need to be calibrated rather than just making a longer piston rod ?

does gas expand more as it travels down the barrel ?
I figured it would remain confined as long as it was in the barrel.

I am not a gunsmith just was thinking about atempting the same thing (with qualified help of course)

...........

I didn't take it as a challenge:)

And even if I did... so what? (Deckard is sending me hate mail almost every day and I don't make a big fuss about it:D )

A) Excellent. Who has them, and do they find they're just as comfortable as regular stocks? Any downsides?

B)Thanks, I was asking from a 99% theoretical viewpoint. I'm too broke and busy to do it anyways, but what I considered was, that the trademark of the SVD is it's long barrel, so the best way to look similar to to get the barrel first, so the profiles are similar. Anyways, thanks for the info.

I've found that the folders' butt is a little on the small side and the smooth surface has a tendancy to slip off my shoulder (fixed this with a strip of hockey tape). However, for pure LCF, they are hard to beat

And the 7.62x54 cartridge......

You can also use skateboard tape. To make sure it's not going to snug or break your clothes, run a wire-brush on the tape few times.

You can also try the sks with an ATI "Dragunov-style" stock. If you do that, go the whole 9 yards and look for a "drill and tap" scope mount. Don't be shy to notch the stock to fit the mount on the receiver.
If you are after the LCF, you have to beg member Kasat to repost the pics of his moded SKS's. They look cool indeed.
