VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Brass Case Ammo

How many people have tried brass-cased ammo in your VZ? I have heard that the soft brass can have issues in the VZ's chamber with case seperations, and this has happened to a friend of mines VZ. Is that common to all VZ's, or does it just happen in some?

Ive tried some 125gr PMC brand brass ones, they get stuck each round in the chamber. :(

So when i go hunting i load the first one in (#### and shake the cz858 a bit and it loads ok) then the other 4 rounds in the clip i use czeck stuff.

I have had the same problem with PMC soft point it does not feed very well through the Vzs and Czs.
Am sure a hollow point would work better if you can find some in 7.62*39.

Its too bad the Czech never made there own rendition of the dragunov.
+1
However, they kept some scoped bolt action rifles in service with some elite troops until early 90's.
I had the opportunity to try one of those (old made bolt action) ZB in 8mm Mauser at the Military Games in Berlin 1984 (outside of the competition). My only 5-shot group was 54mm (some 2-1/8") at 250 m (which is impressive for me). EDIT to add: that was from bench, no time limit.
It had a VERY smart scope, match bull barrel and they were using match ammo from unmarked boxes.
Their Dragunov's are generation 4, 5 and 7 (the Russians never exported gen. 6).

Dr lector, thanks for the barrel pic. I was not thinking of replacing a barrell I was thinking of 6.5x39, 9.3x39 or a 7x39 or something like that. Lord knows the CZ is perfect as is but something new might be interesting.

Hopefully in the next few years I'll find one with a pitted bore on the cheap.
