Just got my Vz 58S today. What is odd is that is has scratches and the blu of the gun is gone a few places. I called Marstar who claims that this is du because the guns come in in big containers wrapeed with something and that would explain the scatches....Is this true ?

The rifles are assembled from surplus parts that have been sitting in parts bins in various factories since the 60's. My VZ-58 has the same worn look as yours, I think the CZ-858's might be refinished.

58S vs 858

I thought my 58s looked 'new' when I bought it, but when I compared to my 858 - which was completely mint out of the box - it wasn't quite as nice... pretty close, though.

ugh, not this again...

Your vz58 is assembled as a semi auto from unused parts that have been banging around factory warehouses for the last 40 years and is then tested after assembly to ensure proper operation.

The cz858 is assembled by an entirely different manufacturer who may have receivers that weren't banged around and the barrel that they use is newly parkerized.

Parkerized ?

Never seen a parkerized 858 - factory painted only - :confused::confused:
How bout something like this ?-

I dunno, is it painted or parked? I hear painted sometimes, and parked other times. It certainly doesn't exhibit the characteristics of paint but then again it isn't like anything else I've ever seen that was parked.

Maybe it's some kind of powdercoat? I dunno... Whatever it is it's ugly though :)

So basically you're all telling me that it's quite normal to get the VZ-58 in this state. The VZ-858 would have been nice. Wolverine supplies has it but it is the nonrestricted version, the barrel is longer. What should I use to paint it (is it paint or blued, it looks painted). I just don't want it to get rusty in a few years.

VZ-58 finish

It looks like a catalytic lacker, possibly baked over beadblasted and/or parkerized metal. It is very durable but you could try Armacoat or another similar "western capitalist" finish on it if you don't care about collector status for your VZ.
I have a very pristine looking VZ-858 and it shoots great.
Don't know if the shorter version shoots as well but I guess if the Czech were granted the right to keep on issuing the VZ-58 after testing by the USSR, this might be because the firearm was better than most assault rifles of the Warsaw Pact.
Any way you do, you'll find it prettier and prettier the more you shoot it.
Have fun!
