Hey All

I'm new to the VZ so go easy on me. I just got a gently used 858 from another forum member here.

I'm shooting Wolf 123gr FMJ and the bolt does not lock open on empty. At first it was just sporadic now its on every mag.

Also if I lock the bolt open manually and take the mag out the bolt slams home as soon as I move the magazine out.

Any ideas. I looked at the bolt stop but did not see anything out of the ordinary.

Also got the rifle a bit hot - not smoking though and the paint is just peeling out of the barrel :( looks like I will have to get it refinished.

Thanks in advance.

2 things possibley.
  1. The follower on the magazine is not interacting with the bolt hold open lever.
  2. The mag is not being seated properly.
Does the mag "CLICK" into place?
Does the OEM bolt hold open lever stuck?
Is there any after market parts on the rifle?
I was also noticing these type's of issue's on certain magazine's. Then I switch out the part's with B.C. Tactical's after market mag & bolt release combo and it disapeared using the same mag's that were giving me these issues.

I had that happen and there was a bunch of #### in the spring on the thing that sticks up preventing the bolt from locking back. Cleaning it out let it work fine.

Weak mag springs can cause this.

Our Bolt Release has the contact surface for the follower extended to counteract these weak mags. Easy

Thanks for the info.

The gun had a dlask extended mag release installed. I took the pin out swapped in the stock release and cleaned the bolt stop.

Now only one mag that causes bolt to slam home upon removal of the mag.

Will try it a the range next.

If the bolt closes when you remove the mag, it is because the catch doesn't lift far enough to catch the bolt.
Try cleaning the catch and its recess with a degunking spray, just in case there's some debris preventing the catch to go full up.
Perhaps the part has been bent out of shape too. Take the bolt out and play with the bolt hold open; it should be moving freely. If there is any resistance, you found the culprit.
Good luck!
PP.
