Another thread has me thinking about these guns. Do they come in 223 rather than 7.62 and is there any reason to want 223 over 7.62x39?

With HP ammo do these make alright deer guns?

If you do a search there is tonns of stuff on this, even within the last month. They do come in both and it's really a preference more than anything.

VZ 58, not 858, Come in 556/223 or 7.62 x 39

CZ 858's only come in 7.62 x 39

The 7.62 might make a decent deer gun at short range providing you buy hunting bullets and not FMJ military surplus

223/556 too small for deer and not permitted in lots of provinces

Palanak's Drag'd 58 took this fine buck...

But then again it was in 7.62 not 223
Although for cyotties 223 would be great.

It is permitted in Ontario, and within 100 yards, providing proper ammunition is used, it can make a very capable deer gun. I finished a Deer off this year using my Swiss Arms and 60gr Nosler partitions. One shot, through the heart and out the other side. It was a young buck, around 200lbs.
