Hey guys decided I'm buying an 858 now im sure this has been covered but I couldn't find anything on the search. I would like to know does this rifle run better on 556 or 7.62?? Also in general is everyone satisfied with these rifles??

858 is the model number for the mostly prohibited CZ version. If your talking about 556 vs 762 you are referring to the CSA vz58. Same platform but you can same yourself some confusion by just going by vz58

A lot of people who tell you to buy in one caliber vs. the other are telling you to buy that one because it's the one they own. It's more of them patting themselves on the back, or affirming their own decision, rather than an unbiased opinion.

The truth is both the .223 and 7.62x39 are great. CSA makes good rifles. not only that but they stand behind them with a solid warranty. Not every 7.62 model runs flawlessly and neither does the .223 remington model in every case, but for the most part, whichever caliber you choose, you'll be getting a very good rifle. If the one you end up with has issues, the warranty will take care of it.

Don't let someone try and convince you that simply because the Vz 58 was originally chambered for 7.62x39 that all VZ 58 rifles currently produced in that caliber are perfect. It's not as though all 7.62 models are sprinkled with magic pixie dust which renders the firearm immune from FTF's or FTE's. I've heard from some guys with the 7.62 models about numerous issues. It has nothing to do with the caliber. It's just an anomaly. The same goes for the .223 issues these days because from what I heard, the .223 model issues have been identified and taken care of.

Your choice should be based on which caliber you want to shoot. For me, the .223 remington would be my choice. The ammo is relatively cheap and (this is key) it's abundant. The ammo buying situation for .223 is far, far better than for shooters of 7.62 x 39. And please don't anyone challenge me on it because I'll just point out the proof of whats available currently and how much it costs for both calibres, and then I'll say: "See?"" and you'll go "Oh......ok nevermind". that is Unless you want to shoot corrosive. I also like the .223 round because it has less recoil. I don't mind the recoil of the 7.62 but it makes follow up shots less accurate, and I don't know anyone who would prefer more recoil over less recoil. That would be kinda weird. Heck, if I could have the recoil of a .22 LR every time I shot a 12 gauge slug, I think that would be cool. Although who doesn't love a good shoulder slam once in a while. I know I do, haha.

Buy the 7.62, I have both. The 7.62 works, the 5.56 is going back again for warranty work. I like the 5.56 and it was my first choice but mine doesn't work well yet, I'm hoping it gets fixed right this time.

Did you buy it new and do you know what year it was produced?

The 2013 model year CSA's has some issues with the gas port size if my recollection is right. I have a 2014 model year and I have about 1000 rounds through it and its been awesome!! It is also quite accurate as I was shooting clays freehand the other day at 100 yards with not too much effort. Don't be afraid of either calibre as they are good rifles and are a ton of fun, and if you have an issue then the warranty on the CSA VZ58's are looked after by movie arms, and they take care of their customers.

Yeah, that's the issue with my 2013. Funny thing is, it was trouble free for the first 1000 or 1200 rounds and then it started acting up. I really like both calibers and the rifles are fun, I just want the one fixed once and for all. That's why I bought the 7.62 rifle, so I could still play every time I have to send off the 5.56 for repairs. They're telling me this time they'll probably replace the rifle.

ah dangit. haha. I was wrong! :) Thanks for the correction.
Hey, no worries, it happens. You're right though, the rifle says .223 Rem on the side but one of the reasons I bought it was because it would also eat the same 5.56 food as my ARs do. So, I did look into it before buying.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm gonna do some more research on them but rest asured one will be in my posession before my wife knows it haha.

To my knowledge the 858 was never chambered in 556, just the vz58 was.
Never owned one in 556 but I still vote for the 7.62...likely the same accuracy but cheaper ammo.
