what causes this. it's got about 2500 through it at this point.

Interesting that there seems to be a lot of broken VZ parts threads of late. Also, you don't seem to see as many broken parts threads with the CZH 2003's etc as there does with the 858's.

;)

Because most of the internals are made from used parts.

Not even close. Pretty much the opposite. Wish I could say more, perhaps the person who let me in will share his knowledge sometime soon. Otherwise I said I would STFU...

Damn... I have two 858's that I haven't even shot yet (no time + too far from an outside rifle range), but some of the things I read make me think twice about having bought them, as the VZ's seem to be pretty fragile.. and definitely not as tough as the AK they try to emulate with their AK-like looks (which is what I thought they would be like, reliability-wise.. hence having two of them).

Damn CZ's... it seems like their gremlins & weak spots never seem to end, according to some reports like this one. Kind of like the Hyundai Pony of military rifles?

:(

Kinda thought that might be the case, just from what I've been seeing in these threads. Seems like perhaps the 858's were not made the the same specs as the original rifles. Especially when it comes to the composition/treating of the bolts, strikers, and locking pieces.

Not sure if I'm off base here but that's what seems to be the case.

gremlin is apparently not present in the fullauto original, only with the canadian market reciever which is missing a large part of the firing group, it probably doesnt happen that much its just that when it does it shows up on the internet
weak spot? its been a solid performance every time ive taken it out to the range, my shoulder has turned purple many times before the rifle is ready to go home
ive seen a couple youtube vids where guys are abusing them and they seem to function flawlessly

Many of the parts are used, some well used. The bolt could have already fired 20,000 rds and you wouldn't know. This is the reality of getting a generally solid rifle like the CZ 858 for the price you do from Europe. You're still getting a very good deal. The CZ needs some tweaks like many of the rifle out there to run at its peak, that doesn't mean its a bad apple. Take the Norc M14s, a fantastic rifle out of the box for what you pay, but they do benefit from some work. Every thing mechanical fails including AKs, look at our friends to the south then get bum AKs all the time.

Before you go swapping another bolt in there be sure to check for head spacing. Every VZ barreled action is matched to its bolt and locking block, start swapping those parts around and you risk excessive head spacing which can cause a KB thus ruining your whole rifle. My guess is that the critical tolerances on the parts are all pretty tight and you may luck out. Just be sure to check first.

I purchased a couple parts kits from wolverine when I purchased my 'new' cz858. then completely stripped the gun down and duracoated it. the parts in the rifle had no wear on them whatsoever and had minor engravings which I figure were for headspace specs etc. The parts kits were/are made up of used parts, visably used parts, with the same numbers ingraved onto them. Im sorry, but the 858's were assembled from new stockpiled parts. Ive shot the living daylights out of mine and as long as you clean the barrel out when your done and lube it it is by far the most simple and reliable rifle that ever came out from under the iron curtain...I did allot of research before i purchased it,back when the VZs were still available and the CZ is by far the cleaner of the two. There are pictures of the vz's online here and the internals vary from good to scary depending on who assembled them.

The myth of the gremlin is because of a missing part.

Now the question is...
do you know were this part goes?
:p

This kind of breakage can happen to pretty much anything, whether it's made of surplus bits or not.

I had an AR bolt break in under 1500 rounds.

You call a rifle that cracks locking blocks and bolts and has used parts in it that may have seen twenty THOUSAND rounds a "very good deal" at $700+!?

I want some of what you're smoking.
