OK, I posted a small blurb a few weeks ago, about a very low scout scope mount I made from a VZ upper handguard and a length of weaver rail.
For proof of concept, I purchased a small 30mm. Tasco RedDot unit and mounted it on the prototype.
Well, I just found the time to test it this afternoon and it behaved exactly as figured: very stable, same cheek weld as when using the iron sights, very fast and repeatable.:dancingbanana:
Now that I'm satisfied, I'm going to buy a Kobra sight at Kalinka Optics and put it atop that mount, just for "shiites and gargoyles"...

Well, it's the same mount in the same location. The only difference is that the rail, being contained within the handguard's limits, sits about 3/16" lower. The rail is a standard Weaver rail with a small base radius that fits the VZ's handguard tube perfectly. I drilled four holes and tapped them with 6-48 threads to get enough purchase in the sheetmetal channel. I am fabricating a small part that will be placed underneath the channel and add some more thickness for the screws. As it is, however, it is already very solid. Perhaps putting some Loctite Red will be a good prevention measure.
Having to find a way of fixing the handguard side panels, maybe I'll extend that small sheeetmetal part to form a retainer.

Where are the details for a scout mount that securely mounts onto the receiver and still allows you to clean the gun properly without losing zero?

What did you use to attach under the hand guard? Did you make a nut?

Even if it's a tight fit I would bet that it does not always return to zero when it's replaced after being removed.

There is only one way to mount a scope properly, and that is to mount it to a properly installed reciever mount. Anything else is just a gimmick.
 
I wanted a mount that didn't necessitate drilling and tapping. Maybe I am just plain lucky but this one is very snug and exhibits zero play.
Now, one very nice setup (if drilled and tapped) would be one of those russian sidemounts (with the lowest possible position over the bore) and a Kobra or POSP scope sight clipped to it.

If one were adventurous, one could replace the rear cross-pin with a fastener and snug it down, then devise a forward clamp to cinch the front of the hanguard to the gas block. Would be pretty solid then.

Very interesting idea. Now I've got to start looking around for an extra upper handguard :D
 
This is easy as pie. I made this last night with a crappy old Weaver base to try it out. I've got a piece of 1913 rail on the way to make a proper mount.
