VZ modernization project....

I agree, in that I don't like a red dot field of view that is obstructed by iron sights right in line with the reticle... however the co-witness with the Troy/NEA rail would be a lower 1/3 co-witness. You can basically use the red dot above the iron sights, and if the optic fails, the iron sights are right there, without removing your optic.

With the optic mount that you suggested, you completely off your rear sight! A setup like that is fine on a flat top AR, where you have pleanty of rail space for a flip down back-up sight, front and rear of the optic.... but what the hell good is your rifle without an iron sight?!
Try mounts that are QD and now you get the best of both worlds. Although beware of the straight stock adaptor. As this instantly removes the most of the muzzle rise occured by this rifle design although it does also eliminate the use of the stock iron sights. Also the 1/3 B.S. only works on certain optics. Also the front sight takes up more than 1/3 of the field of view.

:sniper:Where did you get the drum???:eek::eek::eek::eek:
Modded AK drum. HyCapps before his ban was selling 1's like this. A CGN member did ask me to make 1 for him then bailed on me and left me with the bill. So now I have 2. 1 for my restricted and 1 for my non restricted. Although it does not have the bolt open feature like all CZ/VZ mag's have.

Canadian law restricts the mag limit of almost all non-restricted firearms to 5 rounds.
Some people still like to delude themselves with a drum mag pinned to 5 rounds.
Or they think it looks cool

I think it does look cool and if that's good for the owner then it's good . If you own an 858 or 58 and have 5/30 round mags maybe you should get the hack saw out and cut them down to 5 rounds so you won't be accused of being cool also . I also think fake or dummy silencers look cool even though they do nothing like the 25 rounds of unused space in a 5/30 mag .

I don't even own any drum or Beta mags, but if I did, I would consider it a compromise in ergonomics for increased capacity. ...just can't justify putting something on my gun that does nothing.

I have no problem using the factory irons with my inline adapter.

The front sight does not take up more than a third of the view, and in any case if you are using a red dot, you should be focused on the target, not the sight two feet away.

If you can transition from a non-cowitness sight with qd mounts anywhere near as fast as any ten-year-old can transition to irons with a co-witnessed sight, you should quit your day job and shoot for a living. You will probably be a multi-millionaire.

Anyway you know my recommendations...Aimpoint Micro on an NEA/Troy handguard is the fastest and sleekest it gets.

I don't run any non-cowitness setups on any gun anymore...too slow on optic failure drills. Not even vaguely similar to something approximating "close"...of course anyone familiar with the DD footage from a few months back will agree that a Micro is unlikely to fail. But overall it just depends how you look at the gun. Is it a range toy or a fighting gun? Range toy...cowitness is not that important. Something you will count on? Cowitness is mandatory.

That's great! :D
Envoy your personal decisions Sir!

I totally agree and an aimpoint T1 and NEA hand guards is also what I use.

Even though there is little to no of our products on this, it's still a very attractive build. Good job.

Most worthwhile mods I've found for the Vz family of rifles have been the NEA railed upper handguard, tactical bolt release, and ambi mag release. All awesome.

Although I have since changed this set-up to the 1 like you have Dave. I like the western style scopes much better than the POSP scope. The Eotech is now waiting for another rig to be released in Canada and the FTS is collecting dust some were.
As for misanthropist coments well thats just great for him. But as he points out if you purchase great optics like an AimPoint or others. Even a shotgun is hard to make them stop working. Plus battery life of 600 hours or more is the same as leaving it on for 25 days or more and with the AimPoint's I have yet to hear of some one needing to turn it off.
Here is a pic of Stevo's rifle co-witnessing the red dot on a CSA carbine with the NEA handguard and a Bushnell TRS-25

Yes, it's tritium, a new product from NEA. My rear sight is unmodified. I'll probably get the NEA tritium rear when it comes out but my iron sights are just back-up to my RDS.

I replaced the Aimpoint on my CSA Carbine with another Bushnell TRS-25 so I can co-witness. It gives a bottom 1/3 if you want to line them up.

So I say to all the people who want a red dot but still use the iron sights the rear peep sight from Rauch Tactical and the NEA front tritum post is the only way to go. Since it will be illuminated when it's low light or dark out and the rear peep sight resembles looking threw the red dot you have the best of both worlds. Now if Dave could just convince Jeff to release the rear peep sight with the tritum inserts well I would have 5 rifles that would no longer need red dots.
Caugh.. Caugh...
;)

Oh ya on a side note for anyone that is new to the sport and would like to learn more about co-witness here is a preaty straight forward read about all the different styles there are and the benifits and dis-advantages of each.

Yes, you and me both. I can't wait to get my mitts on the tritium rear.

YFZsandrider: welcome to the wonderful world of C/Vz-8/58s. Gorgeous rifle you have there!
