I recently picked up a VZ24 and I have a couple of questions about it. I'm looking to employ this rifle once ready for large game hunting whether I keep the same caliber or convert it. I'd like to take it into a shop in the Edmonton and give it a once over before I commit to investing any money into it.

Any suggestions on shops in the Edmonton area that can give a once over or are competent on doing a caliber conversion?

How much does the factory wooden stock weigh?

Can I get quality magazine conversion kit for this rifle?

Has anybody used the Badace Tactical scope mount? I'd like to put a scope on this rifle but I hate the thought of damaging the lion crest on the receiver hence the use of the scout scope mount.

Thanks!

The Badace mount is pretty good but you need a long eye relief scope to go with it. You also have to remove the rear sight from its mounting bracket. Don't lose the rear sight as they can be tough to find in decent condition.

Is this a full military rifle? If so, any permanent mods will substantially drop the value of the rifle. There are lots of sported mauser rifles kicking around, in a variety of calibers, c/w scope mounts for not much more than the cost of a new sporter stock.

Scout-mount yourself a good optic, pick up a box of S and B soft point and you're in business pal. No need to change calibers at all.

Gun itself in full config should weigh around 9 pounds. Wouldn't recommend changing anything if you can help it.

Magazine kits can be had, but the weapon holds 5 rounds and feeding from clips is pretty easy. If you need a mag kit, there are even some WW1 era period correct ones available from Corwin Arms but personally I've had no problems using the internal mag as God intended :)

Have fun!

I agree, keep the original 8mm caliber. Common factory soft point ammo is pretty readily available, should be good for critters like white tail. If you are going after bigger game(moose or elk) then its probably time to hand load some stouter bullets as I haven't really seen premium factory ammo in 8mm on store shelves in Canada.

I'm not concerned about value loss on this rifle as I plan to keep it. Upgrade and change things over time and use it but no plans to sell it.
She definitely has a little weight to her... I was thinking about 10lbs. It would be nice to shave the love handles off of her to help with dropping some weight.
I'm currently running a Burris scout scope on my Ruger but am looking for recommendations on a different scout scope for this rifle.
Thanks Coffice for the mag advice I'll check Corwin out. I'd rather run a mag for easy of hoping in and out of the vehicle.

Just use it as it is or go grab a cheap Savage Axis in 308 or a sporterized Enfield from your LGS. Honestly messing with the Mauser will be both more expensive and will ruin any historical value of the piece. This rifle was made 70 years ago and shouldn't be bubba'd
