The other day I fired a box of 20 Norinco copper wash non-corrosive 7.62x39mm through my VZ58. The rifle functioned flawlessly. When I got it home I field stripped it for a quick cleaning and noticed that the top corner of the bolt was chipped off.

I have a few questions for the CGN masses. Has this happened to anyone else? Also, as a stupid question how safe is it to operate this way? Note that it probably operated like this for some time before I opened it up, it's not like it FTF'd. Finally who has replacement bolts for this thing? I attempted to contact SFRC (where I purchased it) through their site and am currently waiting to hear back from them. The rifle probably has 200 some rounds through it and it was purchased in July 2013.

Thanks for the wisdom.

Well, I recently bought my vz58 used. I thought my bolt was just terribly machined. It functions fine and flawlessly still. But after seeing your bolt, I now know that it's broken..

Send them an email, and ship it out. Takes about a month.

Yep same happened to me. Your gun is very likely over gassed. Call movie arms send it in. I have put at least 1000 rounds through mine after return with no issue. Mine broke around same round count. Also check your carrier closely as mine was cracked as well. Do not buy a new replacement bolt until movie arms looks at it. I thought my gun was a Lemon with crapping workmanship so I bought 2 surplus bolts and carriers in case. So far have not had to use them.

I had a TRW M14 rifle bolt do the same thing with norinco 308 ammo. So it is hard to say why this happens. Put another
TRW bolt in the gun and it is still good to go ten years later.

Best to contact them as they handle warranty work for the CSA's.

It's a '13 CSA quality control issue. Many are over gassed, plus this is a modifed CSA bolt which is weaker that the original CZ design. CSA redesigned some of the parts, namely the bolt and block.

My '13 was over gassed and had an improperly milled firing recces that cause pierced primers blowing out the firing pin. New bolt and smaller diameter piston were installed by Movie Arms. 500 rounds and counting with no problems since.

Can anyone tell me if the excess gas problem was caused by the gas port being too large on all the variations ? Wouldn't the shorties require the larger port because of the 7.5 inch barrel or was the bolt defective to start with ?

From reading the boards there apparently are issues with VZ58's manufactured in 2013 (all gas port related). I have one, but I've put 450 rounds of 1972 Romanian surplus through it and haven't had a split firing pin or broken bolt yet.

I also saw a video not too long ago that was showing that the new Norinco ammo was creating high pressures, I'll have to take a look for that but if you have the over gas issue and combine that with 'hot' rounds I could definitely see bolts cracking like that.

Mine is at movie arms now, takes about 2 weeks from what they told me.

Just send it in they have a 5 year warranty and they don't ask for original receipt so even if you bought it ised they will honor it.

Cheers
