VZ58 in 9mm

+1 on the 7.62x25 (over 9 mil).
It would need to be gas operated though, and it might need spring work too,
as a simple blowback in 7.62x25 might be too hot and hard on the receiver.

7.62x25 is very hot. There have been reports of surplus ammo (Czech) going in excess of 48KCUP.

The few people that made AR15s blowbacks in 7.62x25 have reported premature lower receiver failures.
I am not saying that it wouldn't work,
but IMO the 7.62x25 blowback idea (on any rifle platform) should be approached with care and expertise.

The gas opped AR-15 in 7.62x25 is smooth shooting and can make a nice plinker
for 100 or even 150 yds with super cheap ammo.

Would there be a 7.62 calibre that would be better? Mauser?

I am not sure. From the availability point, it would be a no go.

I would guess that the 7.62x25 would be nice in a VZ58, given that it uses the already existent gas system.
The springs can be tricked with. The bolt can be modified, or at least a 223 bolt (I think).
The mag well and the interaction mag-bolt still has to be solved.

The savings in ammo price would hardly justify the investment, though, unless the conversion is mass-produced.

Or use the 22 conversion (I don't know how good it is, I didn't even see one in flesh).
Then at least it would not be constrained by mag capacity limit.
