Vz58 major jam

OK, I'm rapid firing the vz and on a trigger pull it just goes CLICK. I try to perform immediate action but the bolt carrier is locked. I look at it closer and the bolt carrier is about 1cm from being closed. There is about 1/2cm play in the bolt carrier, but that's it. I was able to remove the rear cover, and the sliding hammer moves. I cannot remove the bolt carrier.

Anyone know how to proceed?

Jelly it open with a rubber/wooden mallet on the charging handle. Remember to keep the muzzle in a safe direction at all times.

I only ever had one malfunction (gremlin excluded) and it was exactly like yours. It has yet to occur again through the two crates I've shot with it.

Zoinks that was easy- thank you.

Is this just a typical vz58 jam, or is it something else?

Any way to prevent this?

Were you shooting surplus ammo?

If so, give the chamber/barrel a good cleaning. It sounds like you have lacquer buildup that's preventing the round from fully chambering.

Wolf still has lacquer coated steel cased bullets. Only they don't use mercury corrosive primers like the old Czech ammo does. Other than that its pretty similar.

I don't get what this lacquer case problems are all about. Take a blow torch to one of those cases. The lacquer will NOT come off. I doubt that it comes off in your chamber. I had to get the chamber of my VZ58 in .223 polished at Woverine Supplies in order to get it to work properly. I think there a few out there with rough chambers.

check your chamber after several hundred rds, you'll notice some bluish residue. Trust me, it comes off, deposits in the chamber, and it causes a jam eventually.

I don't think fouling caused the jam. It felt like metal was wedged or in a bind. When I disassembled the rifle for cleaning I saw new indentations on the rails where the bolt carrier travels. In the pic below, one of the new indentations is visible. The other one, on the opposite side, is hidden by the flash.

I've had a few fouling jams in my day, but this felt like something mechanical.

Thoughts?

the rear tab of your carrier may need fitting

Mine did the same thing as your pic shows "the rear of your carrier is hitting the disconnector on the forward movement of your bolt. Causing the locking lugs to peen down on the rail"

Use a polishing stone and stone down the back of your carrier "just alittle"

Take apic of the carrier tab and post it "is it smooth or rough?"

yup thats the issue

smooth out the disconnector ramp and fill in the dip in the bad weld. The disconnector is getting caught on it.

If your buddy has a VZ or CZ "try his carrier and you will see what I mean ;)"

Or bring it back to the store

Thanks for your help. VZs are pretty rare down here- I don't know anybody with one, and I got someone to order this for me, so I'm the one who needs to fix this, if possible.

I want to make sure I understand you. Hopefully the pic with colors will help.

The welded-on tab seems to higher than the portion that was originally part of the carrier. IOW, the red area is higher than the area circled in yellow. Additionally, the weld is even with the area circled in yellow and there's a slight step going to the tab/ red area.

Are you saying to file down the red area so that it's even with the yellow?

Should I round-off the area where red meets green?

The weld circled in blue sticks out. Should I also file this down?

Anything else?

Again, thanks for your help.

Yes file down the red area til its flush with the yellow

Then lightly round off the sharp edge where the red meets the green "dont round the corners! or the disconnector might shift off the edge.

dont worry about the weld as I can now see its not the issue
