so xmas is coming and i wanna get a gift for me self.
i wanted a black rifle thats non res in 223.
my budget is 1k so i got the t97 and vz58 in mind.

can anyone convince me to get one of them or have any other suggestions on other rifles i may have over looked?

Safe to say you want a NR rifle? I have a T97, and I am enjoying it, but see if you can get your hands on one. They aren't for everyone. Never had a VZ in .223, but the platform is very nice, IMO.

Have you considered the Kel-Tec SU-16 with a nice pistol grip stock? It fits your requirements.

The .223 VZ are fraught with problems, as are the shorties in general... They are based off a 15.4 inch barrel, and anytime you start messing with things it takes a ton of engineering to get it right.

After handling a shooting one I'm not a fan of the T97, but many are. Make sure you try it out before buying in case it isn't for you... Why not get the VZ in 762x39? Ammo is cheap and readily available, and they run very well...

Kel tec has the su16fx coming out in a little bit. Check out the thread on it. It's like the su16f but already comes with a pistol grip stock, railed for end, sight, flash hider, and a case for around 1250.

My money is on the T97, although the VZ is a very solid choice.

The mag change and safety are not as smooth as the VZ, but the compactness of the package combined with AR magazines and cheap and plentiful .223 that is not corrosive like the bulk of all cheap x39 is a big advantage.

I vote VZ in 7.62x39 as well. I own a CZ858 and have also handled and fired extensively the T97, which is nice too. My CZ with factory folding stock in folded position is shorter than the T97, which is important to me for transporting in my pack. Having owned - past and present - many .223 rifles, I can honestly say that 7.62x39 is a superior caliber. It hits harder, is accurate, and cheap to shoot. The 858 is a proven design that works and works well (I have yet to have a failure of any kind in mine).
But most important to me is that the 7.62x39 is a great hunting/survival round. Hypothetically SHTF, then the larger 7.62x39 can easily take deer or larger game, protect your family from perpetrators and shoot through walls and cars much easier than the .223. That alone is why I’ll never sell my 858.

The T97 is a nice gun too, and surprised me by how compact it felt. It shoots well too! The two sh!tiest things about it though are the mag release and safety. Such fail in those two designs. And the cheek weld can be an issue, especially if you’re running an optic. You’ll get a chin-weld if you’re lucky.

All the suggestions and I'm no closer to making a decision lol.
I don't think I'll go with the kel Tec just because i don't like how it's put together by screws and all.
I haven't held the t97 yet so I can't really make a confident decision over the vz58 in 223.
I had the vz58 before in 762 and loved it but sold it for another gun. I would want it in 223 now cause I'll use ar mags in it. Makes it easier than buying another caliber and mags.

Right now I'm leaning for vz58 in 223 then t97.
Gonna see if I can hold a t97 sometime soon.

If you don't want the vz in 7.62x39 then I recommend getting the t97. The vz in .223 has a wack of problems from what I've read

I've got a VZ58 in 223 with a 11.5" barrel and have not experienced any fte or ftf yet (using orig mags). It's well built and fun to shoot. My CZ858 full length in 762x39 is the same. Actually have a T97 on the way.
