VZ58 - Should I get one?

Everything has alreay been said.

Get a VZ58 platform (CZ858, CSA VZ58) its a great reliable rifle. They are light, easy to shoot and accurate. A tapco'd SKS doesnt come close to beeing comparable to a VZ58. Optic mounting, they is a side mount for it, I personnaly mounted my optic on the upper handguard with no issues with holding zero in 1000s of rounds shot

Get it in 7.62x39 if you can. Their are better option in 223

Im a big fan of bullpups, I didnt mind the shouldering ergonomics of the T97 although the magwell wasnt great and the controls felt like they where weirdly placed. I accidently pushed out that big captive pin thinking it was the saftey haha.

Ever since the Tavors where released I have wanted one, renting one at my local range is probably one of the reasons I ended up getting my pal. I figured the t97 -for half the price- could cover tose bases but the more I read about them the more Im starting to wonder if I should just blow the budget and get the Tavor.

As you guys can see Im pretty undecided here haha

I'd say go for it! I know 2 guys personally who have t97s, both have optic rails on them, both work incredibly well, both are happy with their T97s.

Although when buying those, u do have to ask urself whether or not u can muster up the extra money, cus the price of a used Tavor, or M17s ain't much more!

I keep coming back to the VZ 58 and recently found one in 5.56. What better options are there in your opinion?

I have heard that there are lots of reliability issues with the 5.56 version but have also been told that the problems are fixed and new rifles should be fine. I have scoured google and these forums and cant find any up to date range reports. Id love to hear how I can check these rifles to distinguish between potential problem guns and newer 'fixed' ones?

I wish I could shoot 7.62 at my local range but range safe ammo starts at a buck a round... which I just cant stomach...

The CSA version is prettier, but not built to the same quality IMHO. CSAs are nice guns, but not as reliable as the original Cz's. Get a Cz858 if you want a reliable NR rifle.

And one which will probably be prohibited again in 6 months.
Fwiw I've owned 2 CSA and 3 cz858s. I never had a malfunction with the CSAs, but all three CZs exhibited the "gremlin".

Answer in blue within the quote.

As the title sugests I am considering a VZ58. My recent commission cheque came in and was better than expected so my wife gave me permission to spend about 1500 on a new toy.

There are several in stock near me for under my budget and I have heard lots of good things about these rifles. I just have a few questuons for the guys that own these.

1) How practical is it to mount an optic on these rifles? It seems that like the SKS the VZ's entire upper has to come aprart for disassembly and cleaning, meaning that any optic mounted to the foregrip or rear dust cover would probably loose zero every time the gun got torn down? (Id love to be wrong about this)

You are quite limited for optic choices. They have to be short or the brass will hit your scope and if the casing are steel you will dent it.

2) Speaking of the SKS I notice a lot of similarities with the internals. Would I be better off getting an SKS in a tapco stock for 1000 dollars less? Is the ZV58 actually 1000$ better?

Stock SKS are cheap and reliable but feel more crude. A tacticool SKS feels like a stop gap to me and none of the mags really work as a box magazine should (except the SKS-D)
The VZ58 is more slick and have proper box magazine. It is lighter, quicker and points a lot more naturally.
Is it 1000$ better? It depends how much you value the advantages of the VZ over the SKS.

3) Are there any reliability issues with the .223 version? While it would be nice to keep it as 7.62 my local range doesnt like aurplus ammo. I need to actually be able to shoot my guns and I shoot probably 75% at the range. If I get one in .223 can I use the 10 round LAR mags?

I had one for 2 years, I never had issues with it but for the first 40 rounds (breaking period maybe?) I don't like the idea of running cheap corrosive ammo in 1000$+ guns either, I have my SKS for that. You can get AR mag adapter and they are worth it although feels a little cheap because of the plastic material.

If you have suggestions for another rifle Id be unterested in hearing that too.

Look up the new mini14 with the heavier barrel. Either that or the 223 VZ58.

Well just like your coming to the internet to find out info for a VZ58, why don’t you look for ammo on here too. You can find range safe ammo (7.62) for around 35-40 cents a round. I love my VZ. I’ve done the $1000 SKS and it’s a hunk of junk compared to the VZ. It’s almost 10 pounds with a small Reddot on it. My VZ fully decked out with mag and 5 rounds in it comes in at just over 8 pounds. They are reliable, shoulder well, well designed, and look 10 times better. Good luck

Sig, what type of shooting are you doing or expecting for this rifle?
That may help us answer your query better.

I have tried. I see you are from calgary. If you know of anyone arround here selling range safe 7.62 for anywhere near that price let me know and Id be on it like a fat kid on a cupcake. I havent found those prices you speak of even inline here. And when I think I do find a good deal it ends up being steel jacketed or shipping costs out weigh the deal.

I want a rifle I can use in some upcoming carbine courses as well as take out to the bush and have some fun with. Realistically that might end up having to be 2 different rifles... but Id love to be able to check off 2 birds with 1 stone.

Sounds like you are looking for a 223 optics ready plinker, have you looked at the new Wolverines 180 platform?

Yeah i have been keeping my eyes on it as well as the other NR AR clones coming out. I have the sane issue with all of them. None are out yet. Barring any manufacturer delays they still have to be delivered and have the kinks worked out of these new guns. I figure by next years Commission check they will be ready for me to pick one up.

I used it for carbine courses and the rifle is excellent with a red dot on the upper handguard. I ran an Eotech, worked great.
Mag changes are comfortable and efficient. Just practice at home before the course.

Canada Ammo is producing x39 in non-corrosive on a regular basis now from what I understand. When sold out, the stock is replenished fairly quickly...and free shipping.

Yes. Forget optics. get a good peep sight.

7.62 not 5.56

If you want a 5.56, i'd be hanging on for the new 180-c from Wolverine.
