Several years ago I contacted the ATF to see if I could get the CZ 858 approved on an ATF form 6 to attend training events in the US. Back then, the response was no way it was going to happen.

A few years later, I see now there are a couple of VZ58 variants commercially available in the US. Has anyone had any recent success getting form 6 approval to take any of the 58 variants from Canada into the US?

So pretty much to import an "assault weapon" into the states that is not made there you must replace a certain amount of parts so it is technically US made. The VZ58s you can buy in the states have this required number of US parts as do many other foreign firearms you can buy there(AKs, etc). So unless you want to buy the parts to make it compliant or get some sort of exemption from the ATF(which might not even be possible) your out of luck as I understand it. Sorry for the bad news.

Furthermore the only type you'd be able to take is the non-restricted length. Anything shorter than a 16" barrel is an NFA short barreled rifle and - for our purposes - verboten from import.

You would still be able to take the restricted version if you permanently attached a brake to make it over 16". Plus compliance parts it would be legal in that case.

Why on Earth would anyone want to do that?

Why, was not what I was discussing. You said only non restricted would be allowed into the US. I was just pointing out that restricted rifles are an option when they have a muzzle device permanently attached to bring the length over 16".
