I miss my 7.62 Vz 58. I just got a 5.56. I should get another one.

Photo has been rotated. Had a the vz at the range today. It did not like to load PPU SPRN. That's ok, that stuff is too expensive anyway. Great rifle, sights were dead on out of the box. Also I was running it too dry, it really likes oil.

I love the mini.. But it had one similar failure to feed today, I believe that was the fault of the 5/20 ruger mag's lip, I'm no expert though. That SPRN from PPU has a lot of exposed lead that likes to get dented along the feed path.

Yep, it's an amega scout rail, works great. The mini doesn't eat surplus or cheap steel stuff, according to Ruger. People do run barnaul and mfs through them without problems but I don't want to go against the manual and ruin a $1000 rifle.

Good point, I was thinking about getting one for my wife to compliment my VZ58 but if it won't run right on cheap surplus I don't see any point getting a Mini-30 for my needs. Too bad it won't run right on the cheap stuff.

I wouldn't make that trade I consider the Ruger Mini to be a nicer rifle than the VZ - the sights, fit and finish and general overall quality is IMO better. Regarding ammo, the Mini 30 is sensitive to milsurp ammo and hard primers. I was initially not happy that my mini would not fire Dominion or Norinco hard primed ammo reliably (1-2 rounds/mag would FTF) I was able to remedy this problem by increasing the hammer spring with a couple of small washers. Now I have maybe 1 fail to fire in a 100 rounds if that. While the reliability is not 100 percent, it is still excellent for shooting gophers and paper. If I was big game hunting I would have to buy better hunting ammo to ensure good expansion and there is no problem with North American Primers.
