I am stuck between buying a regular restricted vz858 and just having the barrel shorten to carbine length (11.5") or spending the extra money and buying one of these new carbine vz858 that are sold by wolverine supplies, the difference is about $300. So my question is, is there a gunsmith who can/will shorten the resrtricted vz858 to 11.5" and how much to do this?

Not in this country, unfortunately. I *believe* the law is once you cut a semi-auto centerfire rifle's barrel to 18.5" or less, it becomes a prohibited device (correct me if I'm wrong) But installing a shorter barrel manufactured by a legit manufacturer is legal, but will change status to restricted if it isnt already.

Highly interested, I thought NEA was gona pursue this venture, but seems to be fallen dead lately. I also would opt for a rebarelled chopped down version with existing rifles if possible.

Once you ALTER a firearm to an overall length of 660mm or less or cut the barrel down to less than 457mm it becomes prohibited. It seems a firearm may be of the restricted variety if it was manufacturered with a shorter barrel/overall length so long as you don't modify it to become that way.

How is changing to a shorter, factory made barrel any different than cutting your barrel down to that shorter factory length? I don't know if the law sees those two any differently. Can you ALTER a non-restricted into a restricted or is the wording setup in such a way so that action would only result in a prohibited firearm?

It can be done. Requires a gunsmith to do and the firearm being reverified. Simple as that. Even having a non-restricted to restricted is possible (I have one myself).

So much misinformation and lack of facts around this place.

..Talk to your gunsmith.

the vz is chrome lined that's why the extra cost .with all the hassle just buy the vz. . When u cut the 858 it looks stupid at the front sight imo.

Kind of like how the Sergeant Major motto seems to be "make up rules and enforce them"

If I have to hear "finger on the trigger!!!!!" "no ear pro!!!!" or "no eye pro!!!!" again I will :puke:

As bad as the government. People should be free to protect themselves as much or as little as they damn well please without duddly do-right chirping in.

Rant off.

Are you guys or Charles Martel still planning to do this service?

Neit, are you referring to swapping in a shorter, but manufactured at that length barrel in place of the longer (18.5"+) and reclassing as restricted, or is it possible for a licensed gunsmith to shorten a barrel to less than 18.5"? I was of the understanding that this is a no-no, even though a manufactured barrel swap is legal?

the rules of the firearms act is kinda vague. but the RCMP see it as it is illegal to chop a barrel once it is at 18.5.

i feel that they are wrong, but it is they who arrest/charge you. so to avoid a legal battle the gunsmiths are looking at it the same way as the RCMP.

you can replace the barrel with a new manufactured short barrel, but not shorten it

If you are talking about chopping a barrel, you are incorrect....

Ok a lot of people are still not getting this, so here are the rules for cutting the barrel on your long arm simplified.

Anyone can cut the barrel of a semi-auto firearm, regardless of class, to no less than 18.5" (470mm).
Example: You cut the barrel on your M-14/AR-15/VZ 858/REM 1100/AK-47 etc. to 18.5" it is still legal. Cut them below 18.5" and they are PROHIBITED.

Anyone can cut the barrel of a non-semi auto firearm (single shot, bolt action, break action, pump action), regardless of class, to no less than 18" (457mm).
Example: You cut the barrel on your Win M70/REM 700/Mossberg 500 etc. to 18" it is still legal. Cut them below 18" and they are PROHIBITED.

NOBODY can cut barrels below these limits, period.

Nobody can cut the barrel of a restricted rifle/shotgun below the defined limits (18 or 18.5"), even if it is already below these limits, doing so creates a PROHIBITED firearm.
Example: You cut the 16" barrel on your AR-15 to 14", that firearm is now PROHIBITED.

Nobody can cut the barrel of a 12(x) prohibited rifle/shotgun to below the defined limits (18 or 18.5"), even if it is already below these limits, doing so creates a firearm that is PROHIBITED outside of the 12(x) classification.
Example: You cut the 16" barrel on your AK-47 to 14", that firearm is now PROHIBITED outside of the 12(x) class.

The only legal way to get a shorter barrel for your firearm (below the 18/18.5" limits) is to purchase, or manufacture one, at the desired length.
Example: You want a 16" barrel on your shotgun, the only way to legally do it, is to buy one that was manufactured at that length (not modified from a longer barrel).

Barrel extensions, such as flash hiders etc., DO NOT count towards barrel length, they ONLY count towards overall length (OAL).

If you have any questions about this or any doubts about this information contact the CFC and ask to speak to a firearms technician.

Once you ALTER a firearm to an overall length of 660mm or less ... it becomes prohibited.
The CFC told me a if you put a folding stock on a non-res rifle, and folded it is below 26", the rifle becomes restricted.
I'll call it a grey area until it ends up in court.

If it had a 18.5" Barrel it would not be a restricted semi-auto.
