w231 and .38spl

Hello Folks'

Anybody reload .38spl using winchester 231 powder? I am just getting into reloading and hoping to use one powder for my three pistol/hanguns. The other calibers are 9 mm and .45acp.

I use Win 231 in my 9mm so I am curious if it would work for .40 S&W and .45 ACP as well.....

You can use is for all of the above, 38spl, 40S&W, 45acp & 9mm. Great for light target loads.

Win231 is a very good powder. For 38, 9mm & 45 & others.
Being a ball powder it flows & measures very well. I found it to be a little dirty burning but that may have been due to the lube on cast bullets.

When I shot IPSC in revolver class, many years ago I was using a S&W M66 (4") with .38 Specials that were loaded with 4.4 Grains of W231 pushing a 160 grain RN bullet. Accurate enough for IPSC and strong enough to takedown a steel reactive target. My Colt Government Model .45acp load was 5.8 grains of W231 pusing a 200 grain LSWC.

I use power pistol in my 9mm, and .357 loads.

Really easy way I do things is to use the same load in both cartridges.

The 9mm load in the .357 case makes for a really nice plinking load.

Never have to change anything with my powder measure is the obvious bonus.

I use HP38 for 9mm, 38 spl, and 45.

In 38 spl I really like 2.8-3 gn behind a lead 148 gn WC. Great for plinking and for the kids or noobies. I think it chronied @ 650-700 fps lol

I too use WIN231/HP38 (they're the same) for my IPSC 9mm and my "regular" .45ACPs. Works great.

I also use Win 231 for .45ACP 9mm, 38, and 357. These days HP38 and Win 231 are the same powder Hodgdon just packages them in two different bottles.

I think my 38spl load was 3.5 gr of 231 with a 158 swc...

I have 2 powders: for pistol (9mm, and .38 S&W), I use W231 and for rifle (.303 and .308) I use Varget. Keeps it simple.

Yes, I have been using W231 in all pistol calibres from .32 up to 44 mag since the early 80,s. Loads well and always consistant for me---Ron.
