So, I was trying out a few loads with Hornady 178 grain BTHPs on the weekend. I found a load with W760 that my rifle liked. I used that load simply because I had data for W760. I had never used it in .308 before and have noted that it’s not commonly used in same. So, I’m just curious if anyone has used it or uses it regularly in .308. I’ll admit I feel like a bit of a heretic for saying I want to continue shooting the load in question.

Gun Powder like so many things are subject to contemporary Popularity. Nothing wrong using W-760 in a .308 especially when it is listed in a Reloading Manual (like Speer Reloading Manual # 11) and if you/your Barrel likes it. If its already on Hand, use it Smile and save your Money !

Cheers

Good with the Heavier bullets - Slightly slower then N150 which is a 308 TR go to powder with 185-200 + gr bullets .
so you know its the same powder as Win 760 - RJ

W760 definitely better suited to the 30-06 case size in 30 caliber. In a 308, you have to pack the case full of 760 to get close to max PSI, while still only getting 95% propellant burn in a 24" barrel

They make W748 for a reason :)

I have used it often, it's a very useful powder. - dan

Interesting. I used 46.6gr behind the 178gr Hornady’s. According to the book, it should run a little over 2500fps. The barrel on my CTR is 20”, so I don’t think I was quite there. But, it did shoot 0.6” at 100 yards. I’ve never tried 748, and neither 760 until this past weekend.

Agree with Jim, W748 might be more common for lighter bullets but W760 is a fine powder with the heavier bullets. I've used it before in .308 as I have an ancient can of it lying around that I used to use in my .30-06.
Yup N150 for my heavier bullets but W748 for 155 and under. But if it works, it works!

If your gun likes it, you should like it! Perhaps you give up a few fps, perhaps not, but 0.6 inch groups will get most jobs done! Shoot it, and be happy you found a load your rifle approves.

it's a slower burning powder designed for heavy bullets powdered are not specific to calibres as much as they are for bullet weights in multi calibres

When I hunted moose with a .308 I used a lot of W760 under 180 grain bullets. It worked, No complaints. Now I use Varget for all .308 loading, but usually only load 165's or 168's. However, if I wanted to load heavy bullets, and I had W760 on hand, I'd use it. It's more temperature sensitive than many other powders, and somewhat hard to ignite. That and a little dirty burning. But use a snappy primer like a Winchester, don't shoot at -20, and you're good.

Testing a few powders in my 6.5 Creedmoor in winter vs summer, I came up with these results measured with Labradar doppler :

Winter -15c
Summer +29c

Velocity variation :

H4350 11 fps
RL16 19 fps
IMR 4451 Enduron 31 fps
W760 72 fps
IMR 4831 77 fps

W760/H414 is a great powder for heavy bullets in the 308Win. Nothing "heretical" about it.
