Sorry if this is a dumb question but why is wadcutter ammo so scarce? Given that all handgun owners are allowed to do with their guns is punch holes in paper at the range. you'd think it would be the most common variety of a calibre like .38 spl.

What difference would that make? If sellers have to import all ammo why not import wadcutters? ......or are they not made in the US or Europe?
With the current ammo shortages the importers are importing whatever they can get. Last time I bought factory .38spcl from LeBarons all they had was SWC's but that was a couple years ago. A lot of the ammo I see for revolver calibres now is for the cowboy action crowd and they don't want SWC's as that isn't what was used in the wild west. It's all lead RN or FP.

What's the actual cost per round of reloading? (say 9mm or 40) How many rounds can you produce in say...an hour?
Those are two quite complex questions.

If you are using premium factory bullets you can reload premium ammo for about the cost of cheap/bulk factory ammo.
If you are using cheap bullets you can save 20-40% over factory equivalent
If you are using cast bullets you can save 40-60%
If you are using bullets you cast yourself you can save 60-80% (but need to get a bullet casting setup as well obviously)

If you have a single stage press you can reload 100rnds/hour without rushing too much
If you have a progressive setup you can reload 200+ rnds/hour depending on how it's setup
If you have a progressive setup with a case feeder and bullet feeder you can hit 500rnds/hour or more

Once you start reloading you will also find that you shoot a lot more as you know it's less expensive. It's the catch-22 of reloading.

Its only a catch 22 if you didn;t know that going in. I shoot more now that I reload, so the net cost is basically the same, which was the plan al;l along. I enjoy shooting much more because if it as well.
