It all started with a Nightforce scope that was given to me as a gift.
I knew a 6mmbr was going to go under it.
I have a Savage VLP in .223 that was my introduction to loading for and shooting rifle.
I saw the F Class Savage and thought,man,that is one big honkin piece
of machinery.Yeah,a really big stick weighing in at 13lbs, with a 30 inch barrel.
When I first saw it,I thought it would be like dating an ugly girl.
I would have liked a sleek custom,but it wasn,t in my budget.
Needless to say,I brought her home and tonight I mounted the scope,
an 8-32x56 with a NP1-RR reticle.
Tomorrow morning,I'll be hitting the range,to sight in and do a little target shooting.
I'll only be shooting 100yds. tomorrow,but I have to say,I'm pretty excited.
I've got a lot to learn,but that's what makes it all the more enjoyable.

Yes,it is 6BR with a 1 in 8 twist.
I mounted a Ken Farrell base and high Burris Signature rings.
I've loaded up some Sierra 107MK and some Hornady 105 A Max
for tomorrow.
I know they're overkill for 100 yds.,but that's what I had on hand.
I've got some Berger 80gr.FB arriving next week.
I've also got a box of Sierra 70MK's,but thought they might be a little light
in an 8 twist barrel.
I'm limited at the moment to 100 to 300 yds.
If you have any suggestion for suitable bullets,I'd greatly appreciate it.

I am interested to see some groups. I have been eyeing up this rifle myself. Although my custom 6br should be done this weekend hopefully.
 
get the bore looked at by a gunsmith. im not sure if its only the .308 ones that had issues, but you could have baught a lemon right from the factory.
 
Get 105 Bergers and if you can get your hands on Varget, go with 30 grains. Stick 'em into the lands about 10 thou and if you aren't shooting bug holes, throw the gun away.

(Sorry Peter...) stay away from lapua 105's. These bullets are the most difficult to make work. Sierra 107's and Berger 105 BT, 108 BT and 105 VLD are fantastic in all BR's
 
what kind of speeds can be had safely in a 30" 6BR with 105-107 grainers? And if anyone could compare that for me against a 6.5-284 w/ 30" tube & 140's that would be great :)
 
Well,I hit the range this morning and sighted the rifle in.
It was a pleasure to shoot and everytime I looked through the Nightforce,I couldn,t help but grin.
Here's my target shooting some Hornady 105gr A Max over 28.5gr. of Varget.
5 shot groups at 100 yds.
I think I was just a little too excited ,shooting my new rig.
Next outing I know I'm going to do a lot better.
I started with a light load.
Be easy on me,I'm just learning the fine art of rifle shooting.
I've got some boxes of SMK 107's that I will try next week along with some 80gr. Bergers.

Heavy is better!

Stay with the 105gr projectiles. Use between 28.5 and 30gr of Varget and you will be in business. This has worked for me in 3 different 6 BR's. I have one with a 1-13.5 twist that I push the 70gr SMK @ 3400 fps with 34 gr of Varget. This works well out to 300 y/m but after that the wind pushes it around quite a bit. Have fun and keep playing. As one of my buddies calls it "this was a hobby that has become a sickness".
 
With a bit more trigger time you will tighten those up quite a bit more.
After that ou can tune up your loads a bit better.

Curiouslty on your shooting setup? Bag and bipod or of a cradle style rest and bags?
 
You need to do some load development. The bullets will tell you how fast they like to go and I know no shooters that achieve optimal results with only 28.5 grains of Varget.

If you scroll to the bottom, you will see a whole host of recipes for the BR and all involve powders in excess of 30 grains. I also had mixed results with the Amax's but they do work very well in some guns.

There are a few of our club members that own the same rifle as you and all are using either Sierra or Berger bullets.

I have found a very accurate node around 2780 and about 2900 fps with Berger 105's

I'll find a box of the Berger 105's and try them.
I see Berger has two listings for 105's.
105gr. Match Target BT or 105gr. Match Target VLD.
Should I go for the BT's.
Here,s a loading question on the Sierra 107MK.
In the Sierra book,they state loading to a COAL of 2.375.
I did a measurement with a couple of 107,s and came up with an average COAL of 2.287.
At this point the bullet is touching the lands.
There,s no way I can chamber that round at 2.375.
Am I missing something.

Ignore what the book says for COAL. Every batch of bullets is different and every throat is different. When loading for precision, you will find a seating depth that works with your gun and it never corresponds with a "book value".

105 BT are a more load/seating depth tolerant bullet than the VLD's but the VLD's have slightly better ballistics.

Because the NSX line is tailored toward the Tactical shooters. When ranging targets for quick acquisition, the side adjustment will be faster.

You have much finer control over parallax with the adjustable objective over the side adjustment.
