Heading to northwest of Calgary in early morning for upland game bird hunting. Spent 7 hours in 314 & 412 (around Waiparous) area, didn't see a single bird (grouse and partridge).

Did I go to the wrong place (we tried forest and bushes)?

I gave up chasing birds out here years ago after many hunts like that. I always see them when I'm doing something else though. I just big game hunt now though I was talking to a friend today about trying it again.

Mountains were wet this spring. I think that killed off most of the year's chicks. We've hunted 3 full days now with very good bird dogs in 316, 414, 416, and 318 and have only SEEN two spruce grouse. The dogs haven't even gotten birdy once. They just aren't there.

sharptails

Not sure if all of Manitoba is on the decline, my son and I and our dog Ginger went for a walk this afternoon. Filled two limits of 4 sharptails each and added a hun for good measure. Took just shy of three hours for 9 birds. We are in southern Man. in wheatfield country.

I was out the past weekend in Northeren AB, and was able to bag a few. Given last years bounty I thought that this year was going to be the peak, but maybe it was last year. Have seen a lot of huns around central AB this year, just got to find a way of knocking one down!

Was out deer hunting all day Saturday and saw 3 grouse, a Spruce (got him), a Ruffed (my buddy missed him) and another Ruffed (I missed him).
The one I got tasted great, but yeah not too many out here either.

I saw lots of fresh deer poop in #412 area, but just didn't see the deer.

Exactly

Gee, gimmee another whine ! You weren't at work, you were out hunting, and you are in Alberta !

Would you like some cheese with that whine:p..... Like it always says in my signature. "Remember that a bad day in the bush is better than a good day at work.":D As for the Alberta part, I don't know about that;)

I would guess you did not see much deer while you were blating away at the birds:p;)

We were out in the only open area for general tags (rifle) this time of year that I know of, so the 7 deer we saw took one look at us and ran for the hills! lol
Everyone and their dog has been up there to try and get something before the snow I guess and the deer were really spooked. Didn't even get enough time to point the rifle at them, let alone shoot. I could have gotten a black bear, but didn't have a tag and he wasn't that big of bruin either.
I did shoot the grouse with my M1 Garand though. Head shot at 20 yards with iron sights... and yes, 30-06 is the preferred caliber for grouse out this way ;) when it's all you have handy.
