Hey Guys..

I have an old wall hanger side by side 12, that I would like to hang over the fireplace...

How would I go about doing that legally ??

Shotgun is in really good condition and still fires...

Thanks

Eric...

If the gun is a hammer gun, I would suggest pulling the firing pins and filling the holes with Cerrosafe (in case you want to reactivate). Would also suggest the gun be secured to the wall with some sort of locked loop for example an iron loop around the wrist area, fastened into a wooden base which in turn was screwed to the wall. Could have similar loop for the barrel.

would removing the firing pins be sufficient?

The display regs say rendered inoperable by a secure locking device.

But according to the storage regs, removing a bolt from a bolt action is considered rendering it inoperable, so taking the firing pins out should work. But remember, you're not displaying it over the fireplace, you're storing it. ;)

Removing the firing pins would make the gun at least as inoperative as removing the bolt of a bolt action firearm. But the Regs say "bolt", not "bolt or its equivalent". I'd suggest following mooncoon's suggestion. There are also trigger locks that can be secured to a wall. As far as that goes, take a standard Master type lock, and drill a hole through the non-keyed portion, and screw that to a wall stud. But a couple of locked hoops look more secure. Make sure the gun is inoperative and tamper resistant. Also, keep in mind that a displayed firearm can invite a burglary. Make sure it can't be seen from a window.
