Anyone have experience with the Walter PPQ and what are the opinions????

Have been thinking of adding a striker fired to collection and was thinking of the Walter...maybe .40 cal. Opinions wanted as when I buy a .40 S&W I want a model that is built to handle the .40 cal.

Likely the best stock trigger on a striker fired gun currently on the market.
The grip is really comfortable and the gun is reliable and accurate. I’ve only shot the 9mm version with the threaded barrel. Not tried the Match yet.
Like the European style mag ambi mag release.

Cons are not much after market support and the mags are rare and expensive.

Although not a striker gun, the HK USP was designed as a .40 from the start.

Good to know...thanks!

I currently own an M1 Navy model. As everyone else has stated the trigger is top notch with a very short reset. It feeels amazing in the hand to hold, grip texture is decent as well. My only complaint is that even in 9mm it feels extremely snappy compared to other polymer pistols and even to my 45.

I have the PPQM2 Match purchased from Durham Outdoors and just purchased a gently used PPQ M@ 5". Both will sit in a Soley Canadian holster. The Match will have a Vortex Viper 6MOA rding on the slide.

Before I was sidelined in November I managed to put 100 rounds down range using the Match. Shooting freestyle at 10 yards the first hole just got bigger. My eyes are not what they used to be but even at 15 yards from a rest I managed virtually the same thing. The guns are accurate. I would say as good or better than my tuned CZ's and my 1911's.

You have to experience the trigger. Using the using a RCBS trigger gauge the pull is 5lbs 6 oz. Time will tell if it remains there or, as some have reported, fall below 5lbs. It feels like it is around 4lbs, There is the normal uptake then you hit the wall and you get a crisp break. The reset is 1/10 of an inch!

The build quality is excellent. Walther uses the Tennifer finish formally used by Glock for their pistols.

The interesting thing about the Walther PPQ is Walther installs the same trigger throughout the PPQ line. The Match trigger is coloured blue. I have no idea why. In speaking to the service tech at Walther USA, the sear apparently has a mystery coating on it to improve the smoothness of the trigger. I got the sense he was skeptical about how effective it was as the other pistols in the PPQ line don't have it applied and he has found no difference in the quality of the trigger through the line. From comment on other forums it seems all have the same excellent trigger.

The grip is excellent. The only grip I would rate higher would be the Tanfoglio I own. The gun comes with three grip panels.
I cannot comment on how the pistol will perform with the Vortex installed. I don't anticipate any issues. The gun has done quite well in USPSA competitions in the US shooting their PO Division.

I used lead bullets in the guns polygonal rifling and experienced zero leading. The mirrors my experience with the Tanfoglio's polygonal rifling.

The slide of the Match version has several purpose build cutouts done by the factory to reduce the slides overall weight. These are by design to reduce muzzle flip and to account for the extra weight an Optic sight brings to the slide when installed. The M2 5" also has the benefit of cut outs, again to reduce muzzle flip and slightly faster slide movement.

My intentions are to use the Match in the IDPA Optic Division and the M2 5" in IDPA SSP next summer. It is worth noting the PPQ line now resides in the top 10 pistols used in the IDPA US Nationals last year. The PPQ and the SIG 320 both crashed the party in 2017. Glock and the M&P series are still the pistols shot the most in that competition.

Cons:

The mags are expensive. With tax one retailer has them for $80. The Match comes with three mags which is just enough for IDPA. If you plan in using the gun for IPSC you will need three more I would think. The M2 5" comes with only two. Walther I would hope would talk to the wholelsaler/retailer. I have to admit I bought the 5" because it came with two mags, which on top of the three I got with the Match I should be good to go for any local IPSC matches. The gun was almost free :>). One of the above posters mentioned Iron guns as a possible source for less expensive mags. In the US they can be had for around $32US or $40 Cdn.

Summation

When we talk of generations of guns I believe we have entered the 2nd level of striker fired guns both in quality of build, trigger and options. From what I have seen the Walther PPQ line now leads the pack, just ahead of the SIG 320. Both the Gen 5 Glock, M&P Gen 2, Springfield XDM and Beretta APX will have some ground to plow to stay on par with the two leaders IMHO. I base this opinion on having shot the SIG 320 and listening to friends in the US I have respect for who have shot the other guns mentioned.

Next spring I will do a comparison report on the two guns with targets etc. Until then I have the winter to practice left hand dry firing, the quiet serenity of a good book and the frustration of watching my Oilers.

Merry Christmas

Bob
ps I have mot mentioned the FN line. One of our shooters used one for the past two years in IDPA and loved the gun. The build quality was excellent.

I own both the Navy M2 with the threaded barrel and the Match, both in 9mm. I've used them both to compete in IDPA and 3 gun.

Best stock trigger on a striker fire platform, and that includes both Glock, VP9, and M&P

My other semi-auto pistols just sit in the safe because of these 2, lol

Every time I see "PPQ" my brain automatically transposes the "Q" for a "K" and I click on the thread in the hopes of seeing one of the most beautifully made handguns our silly laws make it impossible for me to own.

I got a PPQ from the Walther custom shop while I was visiting the factory in Ulm, Germany last year. It's a newly made PPQ M1, 4" gun with a 5" factory barrel. The trigger from the custom shop is even nicer than the already nice one right out of the box. I told them I didn't want the threaded barrel, and hey presto! 5", matching serial number, and it appeared quite promptly. I think the longer barrel was 30 or 40 euros extra. They have a LOT of options if you have time and patience for the import process, and it could have been any color. I hadn't handled one before, and immediately fell in love with this very nice pistol.

The PPQ is a great bargain here in Canada. They cost more in Germany in euros than they do here in dollars.

I still find my SIG P228 more accurate and easier to shoot, for me.

I'm running a Q5 Match and love it. I've owned a S&W M&P and have shot a Glock 17 (Gen 3 I think). Right out of the box the PPQ has a far better trigger. I have medium sized hands and with the Glock I have trouble reaching the mag release quickly, I must have short thumbs or something. With the PPQ all controls are in easy reach for me which is important to me for competition. The grip is also very comfortable and just fits my hand well. The only thing is you may have to adjust your grip in order to not ride your thumb on the extended slide release otherwise you may find that you won't lock back on an empty mag.

rhegrandpoohpah are you going to run an Optic with your gun? I assume you shoot IPSc locally since I have not seen the PPQ at our IDPA matches. I have a PPQ M2 5" coming as well as the Match. The latter will be used in our SS Division and I intend to run an Optic on my Match. Both guns enjoy the same trigger, albeit one is coloured blue, as the internals are all the same. I may make some local club IPSC matches in 2018 depending how well the shoulder heals up. See you there.

Best striker fired trigger out of the box I've felt, great ergonomics, 100% reliable, great sights stock, I find it extremely well balanced and easy to shoot, it does feel a bit "snappier" than my other 9mm's, but still nothing really, my wife has one and she will typically shoot 3-400 rounds per range trip, so it's still pretty light recoil and not fatiguing at all. Thousands of rounds through it and with a clean it looks like new, inside and out.

I took my Black Badge but never shot a qualifier. I'm just doing 3-Gun at the moment as I prefer the rifle.

Had nearly all the plastic guns (minus the M&P) the PPQ is the most accurate. Say what you want about the grip or height....the paper doesn't lie....very, very accurate. Almost as accurate as my X5's with match ammo.

I have the walther ppq m2 9mm. I love it. The only thing i changed was put on Dawson target sights. My Rear sights were way off for some reason or i am just really really bad ( Beginner).I wished i had the money to get the Q5. Even though most threads I have read , most people cannot tell the difference. My biggest cork with this gun... the mags are stupidly overpriced.
