Walther P1

I noticed in a local gun shop they have a Walther P1 for sale at $395.00
However in doing some inquiry on the internet, it is apparent that only FMJ (full metal jacket?) ball ammo will work properly in this 9mm.
Three questions.
1. What is ball ammo and how does it differ from regular 9mm?
2. What is it about the design of the this autoloader that creates this limitation?
3. Can it be corrected so regular 9mm can be used, and if so how?

I have a P-1
I shoot 124gr RN cast lead bullets (reloads) with no feeding problems whatsoever.

any round nose bullet works fine...

I have a P1 as well. Whatever you do don't use the Winclean wadcutters; they won't feed properly at all.
