Just a helpful note to anyone considering purchasing the Walther P22.

I just picked up the target version (gently used $420 with 2 magazines), and took it to the range with 150 rounds (I only had 45 minutes to spare). From the reviews it was known to be a bit picky on ammo, so I brought Winchester 555, CCI standard velocity, CCI, mini-mags, and Federal Standard.

Guess what - they all fired fine! I had one stovepipe on the 555, and I can't tell why it happened, as it never happened again.

I found the accuracy to be spot on, and before long it was placing nice groups.

The frame is very small, and a little top heavy (poly bottom, cast zinc slide), but i'm trying to get my wife shooting, so the size and light weight is a pro, not a con for us.

Cleaning: I know most of you don't clean a 22 until it stops working. I'm not a firm believer of that. Anything taken care of, will last longer and work better. So, since the pistol was new to me, and I shot through it, I took it home to clean. The target version is more difficult to stripo because the weighted frontend needs to be removed (allen keys) before the slide can be taken off. After that cleaning was easy. The previous owner didn't even remove the factory grease - it was still caked on!

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. It's a small, fun gun. Perfect for plinking, especially for those with smaller hands.

Enjoy.

Yeah, I've been looking for a very low cost one, I already have a Mark III but wanted something smaller and lighter, plus always liked the looks of the P99 so the P22 fits the bill, but with all my other gun wants it's still a little pricey for a .22LR IMO

Sure you could get a chiappa or a norinco for less, but ....

It's in line with the pricing for gsg, less than a sig mosquito, and most other "name brand" 22 pistols. The magazines for the sig mosquito are over $50!

I've found that it's also tough to fine small frame pistols - and it looks very cool! In the end, only spend what you are comfortable with. But if it's a p22, you will be happy.
