I have a WW2 era complete P38 upper, would it work on a newer P1 complete frame, or would I need to have any machine work done, or would it not work at all?

Well its not set in stone, hard to say until you try. It also depends on who made your WW2 upper and when. my no date CYQ upper fits on P1 frame but will not engage safety on cocked hammer. P1 upper will not fit on CYQ frame at all. BYF upper from 43 fits and completely interchangeable with P1, but it has some gap between frame and slide at the back which is not correct for hammer engagement.
So yes it may fit , but may still need some fitment of parts done to function as it should.

Most parts from what I understand are interchangeable. I had heard that some barrels may not interchangeable. Also the firing pin lock, firing pin retainer pin, firing pin and safety catch are not interchangeable between the two from what I've read.
If you get a P1 frame remember to make sure it has the reinforcing pin on it as the frames that don't are supposedly prone to cracking.
I don't have my P38 yet but I know that It has a P1 upper on it.
