Hello,

It is known that Walther P88 is prohibited in Canada due to barrel lenght (102mm if I am not mistaken). Does the Restricted barrel lenght version existed in Canada for this pistol ?
If this is the case I would definatelly get one ;)
Just can not find any info on this gun :(

Thank you in advance for your answers.

One of the regulars at my range has one. It is a 102mm barrel (4 inch), so yes, like the GLOCK 19/23 it is "3 and a fraction" mm short of restricted status. Thank God that 102mm barrel guns are not being imported into this country and used for target practice at approved shooting ranges. The safety this brings to the public is overwhelming.

Unlike the P99 (the 9mm version of which are 102mm everywhere else, 106mm in Canada) the P88 is a very rare gun. Armco had one a few months back and it sold fast. I think maybe 1 or 2 have come up in the EE in the years I have been here on CGN.

If you can find one, you could have it transferred over to a gunsmith (Joe Dlask, Bits of Pieces Barry, etc.) who could then order/make/have made in another country, etc. a 106mm barrel for it. This is expensive and time consuming though, and apparently the powers that be are trying to put an end to this kind of thing anyway (despite not having any legal basis for doing so, but that is another story for another part of the board).

So, in general: extremely rare in Canada, pricey to buy, pricey and time consuming to convert, the powers that be may try and block reclassification of all your time, effort and expense anyway.

Maybe someone in your area has one and will let you try it... and you can get your fix that way. It's gettin' pretty tough to do much in some of these areas these days. Time for a sweeping new approach in this country to: (1) crime control/criminal law, and (2) regulation of firearms and ammunition. I'm preaching to the choir here but... not the same thing, folks! Not even close.

Ghostie,

Thank you for your very detailed answer !
I will try to take a look in to this problem from the different angle :)
And of course if I eventually see the one for sale with 106mm barrel - I will try to buy it is the price will fit in my budget !

Thank you,
Vlad
:)
