Walther P99 question

I have never heard of this, but it could either be new for 2007, or an old idea that never really saw widespread production. If you have a link to somewhere on the internet, I'd be interested to look at it.

I have a 2006 Walther catalog, and there are just 3 models or P99: QA, AS and DAO.

The QA ("Quick Action") is an 8 pound double action trigger that uses a partially pre-cocked striker (I know that some people don't consider this to be "double action", but pulling the trigger does do more than one thing). The trigger travel is half what it is on the DAO model (about 7mm). I believe this is the model many police departments in Quebec use.

The AS ("Anti-Stress") is an 5 lbs./11 lbs. SA/DA trigger. Trigger travel is about 9mm in SA and 15mm in DA. This seems to be the most common model among civillians. This is the model I own. Nice gun.

The DAO ("Double Action Only") is a 9 pound double action trigger that uses a more traditional DAO operation than the QA. Trigger travel is 14mm. Unlike the QA the striker is always at the rest position (no-preload) unless you are pulling the trigger.

P99 Compacts come in the same three models: QA, AS, and DAO - although these guns are incredibly rare in Canada as they are 3.5 inch barrels (89mm), they came out after the prohib laws were changed, and (probably most importantly) Questar hasn't been getting somebody to make 106mm barrels for them!

Oops, I didn't really pay much attention to Walther's latest developments.

The Quick Safe is actually a backstrap lock system that locks the gun from usage if the back strap is removed. It is a new feature on the new Walther PPS

The trigger appears to be the traditional Walther DAO split trigger.

The P99QA is in fact common amongst QC officers and constables and standard to the MUC.

I handled a P99 yesterday at Wholesale sports, and I was really impressed with the way it fit my hand and I also thought it had a relatively low bore axis (which I like).
after HK's any gun will feel low bore axis...;)

I've shot P99 and thought it was a decent gun, a little pricy though. but I think you'll like it...

I'd also consider M&P (almost half the price  ), and Steyr M9-A1 (super low bore axis)

good luck!

My wife has the P99 AS 9mm and I have the M&P 40cal.....both are great guns. The M&P trigger took some getting used to but both guns have interchangeable backstraps. Have never regretted either purchase. I do find the grip a little small on the P99 for my big hand however.

Is there any issues with particular production years, as was the case with the P22? I am thinking of picking up an AA (2000) coded P99. But, my AA P22 was a buggy piece of ####.

Absolutely correct. Try the Walther website. It is loaded with pictures and specifications. In fact, there are even Walther forums. Same. Lots of pix and information.

I own a P99 AS and it has ambi release. Love the gun. 9mm. Looking for a .40 cal version to try out.

My issue is safety. I am comparing Glocks to DA/SA guns like the P99 and comparing to 1911's. I can't help but think that the P99 DA/SA is just the same as the Glock with a NY-1 trigger for an 8 pound pull. Whereas the 1911's have a mag safety, a thumb safety, a grip safety, etc. And you can carry cocked and locked CONDX 1 with reasonable assurance against AD or ND's.

Am looking for opinions on Glock vs. Walther vs. 1911 safety for concealed carry (stateside).

Tnx

P99 had a restrike capaility (and two pulls), Glock w/ NY trigger pull doesn't...

+1 as they say!

You are absolutely correct. AND, if you are injured and unable to rack the slide you can still fire the P99 as the first shot is DA as well. You don't even have to be injured, there are plenty of situations where a DA first round and second strike ability is a major asset. Like simply being laid out on the ground on one's side. Unable to rack the slide. Greasy hands. unable to rack the slide. Hand fending off attacker. Unable to rack the slide. But I can still pop off a round. Lots going for it. I just got an email from my supplier and am ordering another Walther P99 in 40 CAL as well. I may also order another 9mm. What the heck, they are so lovable I may make my backup for my Walther P99 AS another P99 AS! Will have to see how the 40 cal works out. I think it will be just fine, albeit a bit feisty in terms of recoil. I like them a lot. Hey if James B. uses them, what the H., eh?

I think I've shot one with ambi slide release; IIRC both sides look the same (so if you seeen left you'se seen the right side)...
