Hi all,

As the title suggests, I want to get your guys' opinion. Is it worth trading my Gen III P99 ('05 - present) for a Walther P99 Gen I ('96 - '03)? I prefer the aesthetic of the latter but is it worth trading what is basically the newer version of the same gun for an older one? Aside from the longer mag release and slide release, are there any other mechanical/practical differences I should be aware of?

Thanks

PS I'll keep this as a hypothetical for now, but I will entertain PMs if they come in (9mm only).

The newer P99's have beefier internal parts according to some Waltherforum posts. That being said, my Gen 3 P99 had a broken striker tip from just dry firing.

Gen 3's allow you to attach lights etc. without an adapter rail.

Gen 1's just look cooler. Slightly less thick as they don't have Ambi slide release. YMMV. I'm a middle aged fellow who hates how modern iterations of classic guns (Eg/ Beretta 92 FS, Sigs) look chunky compared to what they were like in the 1980's.

I did the same. I had a Gen 3 9mm and traded it for a Gen 1 40. The Gen 1 P99s are the nicest looking polymer strikers ever made imo.

The rail is irrelevant to me so it was an easy decision. I wanted the 40 because it does not have the Pinocchio barrel and basically uses an unpinned mag, but the 9 is an easier plinker. My understanding was that only some of the external features like the trigger guard, slide release and rail changed. I have not seen anything about the internal parts so can't speak to that.
