Walther p99 vs Glock 21

I own a P-99QA and I love it......now. BlueMax owns the AS version in 9mm. Completely different action. I owned an AS in .40 as well. This gun shot incredibly well out of the box.

It's important to know the difference between the actions before judging a Walther. As well, the QA that I own is a 3rd Gen which had a trigger that was unpardonable for a pistol that sells for $1200. My trigger finger would actually cramp up after 2-3 mags.

Luckily, I found a how-to on a Walther form which gave me a play-by-play on how to improve the action on my P-99. I've literally gone from barely hitting paper at 10 yards (yes, that bad. I can group 2.5" at 25 yards with my 1911 .45) to nice tite 2" at point-of-aim groups at 15 yards.

Yes, the Walther is a hands-down prettier gun. And no, that shouldn't be a deciding factor. But it is. Glocks look like something you could scare someone with just by showing it to them. A Walther is pretty, and mine have been 100% reliable.

PS: The mag release on a 2nd/3rd Gen Walther is truly remarkable. Once you realize that dumping a mag consists of simply dropping your shooting finger slightly and effortlessly pushing down on the mag release, you wonder why in hell manufacturers still build their semi-autos with a mag release in the typical 1911 fashion. HK caught on with their USP, but it only has the shorter, harder to operate lever reminiscent of the 1st Gen Walthers.

the AS trigger is not a bad trigger to consider.

3 modes of carry

1. Long DA, chamber round decock
2. Short SA...automatic after the first shot
3. Long SA, chamber round don't decock...kind of resembles the LEM but with the P99 past a certain point the trigger 'clicks' and stays in short SA mode.

I would holster mine in long SA mode.

I like the Generation 1 P99. Really classy lines. The new ones look awkward in comparison

I love my P99. Perhaps it's partly nostalgic as it was my first 9mm. I've owned and shot a lot of other handguns since the P99. Anyone who tells you the P99 is not a snappy gun doesn't know what they're talking about. It definitely is. I find myself quite accurate with it nonetheless and enjoy shooting it.

In a SHTF situation, if I had to grab a single handgun, it would not be the P99. I hate to be cliché but I'd grab my Glock. I've never had a failure with the P99 but I just know the Glock is going to work every time. As much as I love the Walther, I can't say the same based on the experience of others. (One guy on the boards here is a Walther certified armourer. Don't ask him about the P99 if you really want to like the gun. Not a high opinion if I recall correctly.)

I don't think it is an ammo issue with the P99s. We would use everything from 115gr. +P bonded jacketed hollowpoints, to regular old 115's. 124's and 147's. The issue with those P99s, in my mind is more the design of the gun.

Yup. I've put many types of 115gr, 124gr and 147gr through my 3rd Gen P99AS. All are snappy. It's just the design of the gun. If you think a Glock frame is light, you haven't held a P99 frame.

100% agree.
