Walther PPK question (spinnin the wheels)

Does anyone know how difficult is is to put a new, longer barrel on a PP ?
I have one that I am considering getting out of the 12(6) so someone not grandfathered can enjoy it. It is in .32ACP.

I used to have a Makarov & know that they were easier since the barrel was a separate piece that fitted into a dovetail in the frame.

Any gunsmiths that convert the PP's on this site ??

the .32 is harder to make non restricted because it needs a longer barrel and a caliber change. be a cool project to get a 9mm conversion done to it

For those interested in the barrel change here's how my 'smith (Doug at Epps) did it. He cut the old barrel off at the lug and destroyed the short barrel as per the CFC regulations. He then drilled out the lug, turned down a 9mm barrel blank to fit and cut it to the correct length. This barrel was then pressed into the turned down lug and welded or soldered in. If memory serves he also put in a cross pin. He then cleaned up the chamber with a finish reamer. After this was done he had to make a small relief cut it the underside of the slide - this is so the barrel can be tipped up and out when the gun is disassembled. The gun was then test fired and then he started the paperwork to have the gun re-classified and re-registered. He then blued the barrel and we waited for the new paperwork. I believe he charged me about $150 for the barrel change. The Walthers actually lend themselves to this modification due to the lug on the backend of the barrel that already has the feedramp machined into it. Other guns are just not suitable to do - it all depends on how difficult a job it may be. If the gun has lug that can be drilled out and a new barrel fitted then it should be fairly easy to do. Walthers, Maks and Beretta 1934's are pretty straightforward to do. The work to rebarrel the gun was not difficult but the paperwork involved took somewhere around 6 to 8 weeks if not longer.

For those that are interested my 'smith is also awaiting a new reamer and dies. He is going to neck down a .32 ACP to .30 caliber and create a wildcat round. Hopefully the CFC will approve of this change and then he can do barrel and caliber changes in one go with very little other changes needed. No swapping slides, changing ejectors or tweaking mags needed. Should be interesting and I hope it works! Anything that keeps these prohibs from being melted down is a good thing in my books.

Thanks for the technical advice and explanation. I am going to follow up with Ellwood Epps, and hope that Doug is still there. We should have a list of the good gunsmiths out there, while they are all breathing. LOL

The only 2 guns i would like to have had, was my PPK and my 3 inch U.S. Customs Service ( which was 686 smith with 3 inch barrel, black front and rear sights, with round butt) wholesale sports manager put it in his name (he's grandfather) and is selling it on consignment for me, rather than have the feds destroy it.

Always been a james bond fan, as for the ppk. I am waiting for my sask licence custom plates which is MI6 007. for people not familiar, it looks like a regular plate number, for the bond fans, it is the "licence to kill", not that such would be intended as a driver. funny how messages on plates can be that unique without saying the k word.

the members who mentioned the fake silencer option is really cool, i'll follow up with doug, if other members don't beat me to it, and post where the results are going. thanks and regards to all.

somebody did the extended barrel thing with a Makarov - it looked really good, would have looked even better with threading (going for the KGB look)

I love mine :)

Me too Ljungman... although I still need to sort out its feeding issues (it's a franken-Mak)
Former 12(6) gun now restricted.. CHECK :D
Fake suppressor... CHECK :D
Although my 2 Liberal-choking almost-evil CHECKs aren't as cool as Ljungman's being on the same gun.

But if the barrel is lengthened, is it still a PPK?
What NEEDS to be prohibited is the CFC! You folks have my sympathy.

Just wondering if it hurts more to be shot with a shorter barrel? Do criminals only use long barreled handguns??
