Anyone know the value of a p38 that was manufactured in june 1942
at the Spreewerk factory. Serial 17--. stamped CYQ, U, and all numbers match on the barrel and frame and slide. Also has factory number and symbols 88. Gun is in good shape however barrel and slide has some pitting and some of the bluing is worn and on one of the grips has a small chip on the bottom of the grip. its in excellent shape mechanically with very little wear. I have not fired it yet but will this weekend.

Just curious as to what its worth a buddy wants to sell it. I want to give him a fair price.

$600 on the low end -$800 on the high end. if you get it in between there you will have done okay. the gun center here in kitchener just got one in with the red grips for $600.
 
Do NOT use hot ammo in those old p38's. It is still the SMALL Slide version in that year. The new P1 models had the FAT Slide installed witch kept them from streatching and cracking. Since there,s already rust and pitting showing , use only 115 grain 9mm. Your slide springs may be weekend also. I'm not sure witch 9mm ammo to suggest. I reload so I can make them as hot or weak as I want. If you know a reloader, get him to give you some Light loads to try.
 
found a production chart for the Spreewerk factory from 1942 to 1945. Note gun was manufactured in Oct 42.
In 1942 the Spreewerk factory produced 10, 000 P38's from July 42 to Jan 43 and based on the 4 digit serial number and the chart 901-2000 NLS serial numbers that batch was made in Oct of 42.

The pistols made in that time period from July 42 to Jan 43 at the Spreewerk factory were of No Letter Suffix in the serial numbers, all others after had letters and zero's. Also the CYQ stamp was the Spreewerk factories secret letter code to Identify the pistol having been made at the Spreewerk factory. Spreewerk factory pistols were stamped with a E88 which are Waffenamt codes that were the inspection marks used on military equipment by the German Third Reich.There are U stamps on these pistols and the U's are a German abbreviation for tested.

On the frame it has three very small stamps two of them look like 88 with symbol above them that looks like an E laying side ways on top of the 88. The symbol in the middle is of an eagle with the a Nazi swath swastika below it. On the barrel the slide there is the serial number and the letter U however the frame there is the serial number and the letter U and the number 88.

I should clarify the pitting is only on the outside of the frame and tip of the barrel. The barrel is very clean and shiny and I really do not see any wear in it. Pitting probably caused by sitting in a holster while in storage for too long of time.
