I just shake my head when everybody says the deer population in Manitoba has been decimated. Granted I haven't seen every corner of the province but I have seen my share in the last three years of our "huge decline" and people need to actually look for deer. In certain years when droughts change water locations deer will change their patterns.

You should shake your head just to hear it rattle. At least one dead one for every live one, in this area, being the southwest corner.

But how many were there at the beginning of the winter? One reason so many die in winter is that after a couple of easy years, the population is at a peak. Of course, this competition adds to the stress of the hard winter, but still, not all the deer died.

Answering your questions. Not a lot, as we had a bad winter two years ago.Last year was soft,so lots of smaller deer at the start of winter.Alot less deer around today.Snow is going at a fair rate,as we have had a couple of warm days.

The flooding has caused movement and relocation. Where I hunt (close to the US border) it was way better last year than the year before. Like 4x as many deer and bucks. A small sampling of a large province.

Just my observation in travelling between the Gimli and Selkirk area. With the water there seems to be a lot on the move. Lots in the #9 Selkirk to Clandeboye stretch (as usual). Lots in town in Winnipeg Beach, Sandy Hook and up to Gimli. Plenty off #8 from the clandeboye turn off up past Gimli and the back roads. No shortage this year, even more than previous as far as I can see.

Yup. I've noticed that too. So many that it seems like half of them are getting hit on the roads. Might make someone think that they are all dying off.

OK, I give up. What's the "Wandering Sausage" part about? :) I think we've come to regard high deer populations as normal and when Ma Nature strikes em down, we don't quite understand what the old gal's has in mind. Bummer, but you can't feed em all.
