Wanstalls Exclusive Chiappa Alaskan Scout 12" -- Limited Run

I apparently do not watch wantsalls forum enough! Had I been paying attention I would have this Rossi and a G19 on order. Count me in for one of these if you do another run!

Anyone shoot theirs yet?

I got mine in the mail today, just spent the past 15 minutes playing with it, and I am in love!

This is an awesome, handy little rifle, seems very well built, and points so naturally!

The sights are excellent, can't wait to fire this bad boy!

Anyone fire theres yet?

I took mine out today to do some shooting in the woods and ran into some problems. The rifle had no issues with feeding or firing, however, 3 out 5 spent casings would not eject. I had to work the action quite forcefully to get the spent casing out.

Anyone have any thoughts or remedies on the situation?

It has no issues ejecting snap caps or live rounds. Only spent casings seem to be failing to eject.

Any rough spots in the chamber? What type of ammo?

240gr fiocchi JFP and 180gr PMC JHP

Had some hornady 225gr FTX and 300gr XTP but didnt get a chance to try them. took a flashlight and looked in the bore and dont think i noticed any rough spots. i will do a closer inspection later.

Shot mine with American Eagle 240 grain hollow points (?) in mine and no issues so far.

Other than hitting you on top of the head or going down the wife's shirt.....

down the wife's shirt must have gotten an interesting reaction from her ;)

thanks,

wondering if its the rifle or the ammo.

hopefully its just the cheaper ammo having problems. i'll try and take it out again next weekend with some other ammo and see if i run into the same issues.

Questions...

Did you degrease and reoil the rifle prior to firing?

Is the rifle failing to extract the case from the chamber, or just failing to eject the spent brass from the action.

Do your brass show any rough handling marks around either the chamber, ejector, and rim areas? Out of spec brass or parts?

The answer to that will narrow down the source of the problem to either ammo, extractor, ejector, or possibly not properly cleaning/ degresing, and reoiling the bolt.

thanks for the help.

A) rifle was cleaned somewhat hastily before taking it out to shoot. probably not as thoroughly as it should have been.

B) rifle is failing to extract case from chamber, when it does somehow extract it, it ejects perfectly fine.

C) i don't have any spent brass left (picked em up and tossed them in the trash after coming back from the trail). i will closely examine the spent casings next time. not sure if its out of spec brass? just factory ammo from various companies.

i will try giving it a more thorough cleaning and see if that helps.

Replied earlier but stupid iphone bailed on me and I lost my reply :(. Oh well, I got mine and have run about 300 rounds through it. I really like the gun, its somewhere between my Chiappa Mare's Leg and my 16" Japanese built Winchester in terms of quality it think. Its easier to shoot well than the Mare's Leg and handier than the 16". Also, since its a bit more utilitarian than the 16" I don't mind being a bit rougher on it lol. It shoots very well with American Eagle 240 JHP's and the prescribed flex tips ... I took it on a float trip down the river the other week and took great delight in plinking rocks out to 150 yards. The immediacy and explosion on impact of the rounds was very very satisfying lol. Oh and I would recommend against trying HSM 240's through it ... very very very poor accuracy.

I finally got caught up on bills (damn property taxes!) and made the final payment on mine on friday. Didn't expect to get it until after the long weekend, but the postman showed up yesterday morning (thanks Wanstalls, quick shipping appreciated). Nice little rifle, balances very well and action is considerably smoother than either of my Marlins. Fit and finish is good as well, wasn't really sure what to expect in that department (but was hopeful considering the price) but am happy with it. There isn't much of a buttpad, might pull the stock one off and find an aftermarket one with a bit more cushioning depending on the girlfriend's thoughts on it, as this gun's primary mission is going to be her first deer gun/plinker and she isn't extremely ecstatic about any sort of recoil. She has no problem at all with the .357, but will see about the .44....
I didn't have very much .44 ammo on hand and the lgs closed due to long weekend, so only put about 40 rds through it out in the bush yesterday afternoon at ranges from 60-110 yrds on clays hanging or propped up, but was stoked after hitting the first two of two shots, and 4 out of the first 5! I'm not the best shot (on the internet for sure) to begin with, and don't use open sights on rifles a whole hell of a lot, but was pretty happy with yesterday's accuracy, and the firearm gets the credit, not the shooter.
Does anyone know off hand what the graduations are equivalent to in yrds on the rear sight?
All in all am really happy with this gun, and am planning on shooting it and having the gf practice with it a lot this summer.
