want a lever action 22lr for 8yr old

Sounds like the price is more reasonable too, I am teaching him SAFETY first , but also proper care, he learned lots with his Red Rider this past year, but not sure I am willing to shell out $6ooish for the Browning when the Henry gets such good reviews for $3ooish (and I am sure it"ll get "handled")
 
I don't see the issue with looking down the barrel. Your kids should know to open th eaction and check to make sure it's clear, then check the barrel for ubstructions (with a lever, by LOOKING DOWN THE BARREL) before they ever put ammo in it.
 
I've got a Henry (frontier model) I can't say enough about it.... Butter smooth action and accurate out of the box! As for loading, it's easy, always point your firearm in a safe direction and drop the rounds down the tube! Once again I love it ( and so does my wife and she was iffy on me getting firearms!)
 
I bought my son a Golden Boy for his 16th birthday and ordered a custom engraved receiver cover from Henry... Mr.Imperato handled the details himself and was very helpful and friendly to deal with... my son Loves the gun! We changed out the sights for a Skinner Black Gold peep and a Skinner brass front blade... it is an excellent combination and looks terrific.
 
Looking down the barrel? If you follow basic safety procedures (opening action and verifying empty chamber) then this shouldn't be a problem. Yes, firearms should be treated with respect, but I don't agree with one of the "commandments"-always treat every firearm as if it were loaded. Make sure its empty and do your thing. If its unloaded its not going to magically load itself and shoot you in the face. Have you ever used a bore snake or cleaning rod? Have you ever used a bore light? Smarten up people. Its not an evil magical device, its a collection of metal/wood/plastic.

Oh, and buy a Henry. Youth or not, its a helluva levergun. My son got one for his 6th birthday, and he hasn't shot his face or his hand off. He's twelve now and still has all the parts God saw fit to give him. We have 4 Henry's and I wouldn't trade them for all the tea in China.
 
I just bought my Son his first rifle (its for X-Mas).... He's 9 now, will be 10 in Jan..... I got him a Marlin 917 in .17M2 from a fellow member here. perfect gopher gun!

he like's lever guns, but the .17m2 came so cheap, and itll be a good platform to teach safety IMO.

I have an older Marlin 39A which was a present to me when I was around 10 or 12. I don't have a Henry, but have played with one. The Marlin is in a different class, being an old design, made of all machined pieces and very heavy compared to the Henry. Both of them have a long leaver stroke, and with both of them the lever moves and trigger stays in the body of the receiver. The Marlin is take-down, and Henry isn't. There is a noticeable difference in weight and projected quality, but also cost.

The Browning is a short throw lever and the trigger moves with the lever. It is also an all machined receiver, and like the Marlin, also expensive.


In the end, it doesn't really matter which one you get, they are all fun and all work well.
