O.K. So I want a new rife to go hunting here is the thing hunting big game so what should I go for (for Deer,Bear and cariboo) th gauge I mean. I want the ammo to be easy to get . Can any one help me.

Hey Stevermew, both my wife and I shoot Stevens 200 rifles. She has a 243 and I have a 308. Ammo for both is very easy to get, the rifles are light, shoot under an inch at 100 meters and are VERY affordable. It fit the bill for us both...

Cheers
Jay
P.S. Common calibers may not be "###y" for some, but I sure would hate to be stuck looking for shells in the middle of nowhere...

There are many good choices in hunting cartridges out there to choose from. .308, .270 , 30-06, would be some of the most common and widely available and also pretty manageable as far as recoil is concerned.
Rifles are measured by caliber while shotgun bore is generally measured with gauge.

New rifle

Steve have you done any rifle shooting? If not I'd advise you to buy a .22 caliber rifle and learn to shoot. 22's are great for practicing and inexpensive to feed. If you have some friends that have hunting rifles, try shooting some of the different calibers your friends have. Then you can go out and buy which ever caliber you think you like the best. FS

X 2. I would suggest a 30.06 as a great all around calibre for most North American big game, and ammo is readily available in most stores. If you're unfamiliar with recoil it would be a good idea as Fassteel suggested to try out some guns.

All depends what recoil you can handle, if you are ok with a 30-06 or a 7mm rem. mag these calibers are great for that type of hunt and easy to get ammo.

Yeah, something in the 30-06 class of cartridges would be adequate. How much do you want to spend on a rifle and optics? Looking for new or used?

Everyone has their favorite cartrige but tough to say a 30.06 is't the best all around. I don't personally own one but I am not bothered by recoil or difficulty finding ammo, I reload. 30.06 has minimal recoil and every wally world and crappy tire has ammo. And it's cheap. No animal on this continent it isn't adequate for.

As far as the stevens 200 hell yea! Great shooting gun and super cheap!

30-06 is my choice. My "AMMO and BALLISTICS" book (2007) by Bob Forker safari press publishing list over 100 factory loadings. The biggest bonus is ammo is everywhere for it. My second choice is a tie between 7mm Rem Mag or 308.

.30-06 has a wide array of ammo from 125gr for white tail to 200gr for moose. You can go with a bolt action gun if shots over 250yds are what your looking for or Semi auto if you want quick follow up shots.

Bolt action I would say Stevens 200
Semi auto I'm biased to the Benelli R1

since he obviously isnt reloading, he may as well also consider the .308.

IMO these days unless you are handloading there is little advantage to a .30-06 over a .308.
that said id take whichever i found a better deal on - so if one model of rifle i wanted had only one of the two available, or one cost $100 less, id just grab that and not look back.

for a new rifle you cant really go wrong with one of the Stevens 200 packages. $300 and you know it will be accurate and there is great customer service from the company. its also not a good idea to dump >$1000 into your first rifle since at this point most people generally dont know what they want yet. dont make the mistake i made and spend two grand on your first rifle and then realise a few months later that its not exactly what you need.
