years ago i bought a remington 788 in 222 from my buddy who also handloaded for it, i don't. anyways the gun was a solid 1/2 performer with factory ammo and 5 in one hole at 100 yrds. with handloads he made for me. had a 15x fixed simmons on it with adj. obj. the 788 was over engineered imho, with 9 lugs on bolt and a decent factory trigger. Most accurate stock centerfire i've owned and regretted selling it ever since!!!!

yeah ive had 2 now and their kicking my bass.

first one was just a cheap CIL,sold that to a friend cause its a good beginners rifle.good coyote rifle anyhow

now i got a newer one, looks awesome, classic, rem 700 from 1980 i think,so far cant really get it to shoot, have 10 -40 gr ready to fire and see if their the ticket. dropped it off at g-smiths house to check/cut/fix crown b4 i attempt last bullet size.

might shoot 50s(about 1 moa)absolutley wont shoot the 55s.

been trying sierras ,and h 322,imr 4895,blc2,think thats it ,also have h335 to try out.

whats your handload ,or what was it?

all i can recall from bout 5 0r 6 yrs ago, was the 1 hole groups i shot were a 52 gr hollow point and imr powder. not sure if it was speers or not but my buddy swears by imr. i'll have to ask him as he was there on said day. maybe he kept a record of grains, bullet type, powder. sorry fellas, know nothing bout reloading, just going by memory. will try to find recipe for you!

I'm pretty sure my best load in my Tikka Varmint was the Hunting load in the Sierra manual (5th ed). The bullet was a Sierra 40 gr HP #1385 with 26.3 gr of W-748 behind it. COL was 2.125". I was going mental, the rifle wouldn't group worth a crap. The first group as listed above was under 1/2". It would consistantly shoot under a 1/2 and frequently 1/4"

Just remembered I had exceptional groups with 35 gr V-Max's as well. Can't remember the powder though. If I run into my book later I'll add it.

This is a pretty good site I thought for 222 info.

For hunting IMR 4198 or H4198 give you a velocity edge over other powders.
H322 or H4895 are great choices for target shooting. I think H322 may be the best powder for overall accuracy in the 222 Rem.

I'm currently using N130 in my Triple Deuce. Can't get that powder any more though. I haven't seen it in stores for many years. I'm getting exceptional velocity and accuracy with this powder with loads WAY over published maximums without any concerning pressure signs. I have 3 lbs left giving me years of supply thankfully.

I love this cartridge!

I had the same issue with mine. It would group OK with 52 gr HP, using 322 and 4895 powders but not as good as a 222should. Best loads are with H4198 and 45 gr Speer Spitzer, 50 gr Hornady SX, both with CCI BR-4. Try powder charges near the top end of the load charts.

My old 788 222 shoots best with H4198, i use H322 for most gopher loads because it meters nice and shoots almost as good as H4198. Usually use a 50 gr. Hornady sx for gophers.
