Hi all. Have a birthday happening this week and want to capitolize on it to start a new 22 tacticool build.

-Looking to do up a semi auto 22LR plinker
-Want a stock with a rail system I can add crap to later as cash flow allows (red dot site, maybe a flash light, maybe a firegrip handle)
-Leaning toward a 597 as I can still buy 30 round magazines otherwise I would be 10/22. In fact I own a 10/22 now in wood stock but like it for its style and as an iron site plinker
-Is the Mossberg 715T worth considering or is Remington 597 the way to go?

Between the two rifles you mentioned the 597 is definitely the way to go, the 715T is not a nice rifle imo. You could also look at the GSG15 or GSG16 when it’s released, ISSC mk22, or Anschutz rx22.

I have personally only owned the 597 but I didn’t put it in one of those tacticool stocks so I can’t comment on the quality of them. Sounds like a 597 VTR would work for you if you can find a used one, they are already in a tactical stock and with a little work the action and trigger can clean up really nice.

I'd purchase a Remington 597 with iron sights, and modify your existing 1022, account there is a far better selection of after market accessories for the 1022.

OK you've got me convinced to cross the Mossberg off the list.

What's the best source for finding an aftermarket stock with rails for the 597?

Have you thought about the Thompson Center 10/22? It already comes with a tacticool stock and rail machined into the reciever.

Don't get a Remington 597. Get another 10/22 instead and buy an aftermarket stock (or get a SR-22 rifle). SBI has an adapter that allows you to use 597 magazines in the 10/22.

Alternatively, I recommend the GSG-16. It will be out later this fall

There are many options which I have used built on the venerable 10/22 Receiver and Nordic Components aluminum chassis.

Well I ended up getting an Arhangel 556 stock at Bass Pro along with a cheap red dot. Just came from the range and had it zeroed in 9 shots. It's hitting 1/4" groups at 100 yards using federal bulk ammo. Just kidding it's not but it's doing great plinking tin cans and I had a tonne of fun for not that much money. I might ad a foregrip. Any recommendations for one on a budget? debating adding a laser sight too. Anyone have experience with cheap laser sights such as from ebay? Intended use would be tin cans at 10 to 20 yards

Don't get all the hype about the 10/22.

Shot my friends brand new 10/22 takedown, nothing but issues. FTF/FTE, didn't matter expensive or cheap ammoo.

Hard to manipulate bolt catch, mag release.

About $100 in upgrades to get it where it should've been stock.

Rubbish IMO.

The Ruger built ones are a hit or miss as of late, not sure what's up with their QC department. Most people I heard have good luck with TCR22, and it takes all the aftermarket parts.

That being said, I own 3x 10/22's that I wound never part with. They're all customized (none of my guns, rimfire or centerfire, are stock) and I enjoy owning something one-of-a-kind spec'ed to my exact needs.
