Hey, I have just sold an Armalite national match 20 inch upper. I loved the look, feel and accuracy it had, I just felt like the rig was not meant for fast shooting as in IPSC / 3-Gun. I was scared of overheating the SS barrel and was very poorly vented. Good for slow firing but not 50 rounds in a minute type of thing.
I still have my national match A2 style lower, right now I am thinking of building an upper.
From what I have heard, chrome hammer forged steel barrels can take much more heat than stainless steel. And being inside a freefloat vented handguard will also help keeping the heat down.
Right now, this will be a slow parts buying process, probably have something running for the spring.
I was thinking Daniel defence Bolt carrier group and upper, a 1:9 20inch barrel with triangular gas front sight (either GVMT or HBAR profile), A2 flash hider and something along the lines of a Larue Tactical T15-12 railed free float handguard. I still have my TA01 Acog I would use on it.
Opinions on this vision of a setup are welcomed, and also, please share your 18-20 inch rig and tell me what type of shooting you do with it.

Other than the handguard and brand name, this is the exact same rig i want to build now. Except i cant find any A2 upper and 20 inch barrel in canada

well CanAm has the Norinco 20 inch barrels for 150 bucks... :)

I went with an NEA 18 inch just for a trial. I will let you know when it is completed.

Skip the slow build and save your money for a DD Mk12. It'll shoot great and retain a high resale value.

I'm in the process of building an upper for my AR, and I will only observe that you don't save much, if anything by building just the upper. YMMV, of course...

Agreed for the most part on potential savings, you will save some but not a huge percentage. On the plus side, you get to build your own rifle which is a rewarding experience.
I just put this together using the EE and CGN sponsors. Complete used lower, used complete upper/bcg/barrel and a new rail. Without optics I think I'm $1200 in.

Although I haven't shot it yet (real life is a b!tch right now!) I can pretty much guarantee it won't shoot as well as an out of the box 18" DD ($2200).

Currently working on a mk18 project, and this time I'm going used lower and a brand new DD mk18 upper. I want the real deal this time.

Good luck!

^^This. Just completing my first build and I would have saved 25% or more by starting with a new DD and swapping out the parts I wanted.

Thanks for the link PMT, sure is interesting
Some cool setups in there, for now tough, being my only AR, I will not fully orient it to 3gun. I want something tactical, accurate, and fun to play with. But can serve in 3 gun until I get richer (fingers crossed) and get something 3gun dedicated down the road (ie; JP)

I like the pictures guys, its about the way I wish to work in.
Right now I have just purchased a part of the EE from a fine CGNer.
So to resume, I have an Armalite National Match lower, and now in the mail, a 12'' Free Float LaRue rail.
My stripped upper I will probably go Daniel Defense, and bolt i'll try to stay in same manufacturer as barrel for best chances at headspace (maybe a moot point?)
My biggest debate with myself, go rifle length gas and use triangular front gas sight block, or go midlenght and hide the gas in the freefloat.
I guess my perfect one would be 18'' with rifle length gas, if that even exists.
