Want to build a "precision" ar-10, where to start?

Then again you can always go to the gold standard in semi auto .308's, the Knight's Armament SR-25. Found here on the website.


Accuracy and reliability is why it's in use by NATO forces and LE agencies around the world.

And what kind of accuracy do you want ?
Five groups of five rounds under 1 moa, in your price range, only the ar10t, and even that's a stretch.
Five groups of five rounds at 1/2 moa, that's bolt gun territory.

If you're just looking to smack some plates at 300, just about anything will do.

If you're really looking to shoot accurately past 600 yards, there are few that fit the bill. The LMT mws (ss barrel), les baer, larue, or gap-10 are about it. All are expensive. All restricted.
Do yourself a favour and opt for a tikka varmint, or rem 700 5r, toss it in a chassis, and go shooting. Spend the saved money on reloading stuff. You'll learn more and be a whole lot less frustrated. Shooting a gas gun for accuracy is harder than a bolt gun, and they're not as consistent in their accuracy. That's a fact.
Long range shooting is all about consistency of shooting form and accumulation of data with a reliably 1/2 moa rifle.
I have had many 308 ar's that could should 1/2 moa groups. None of them could do it reliably.

300m really isn't long range - it's at the end of short range shooting, but you will see shooting errors on target that are more apparent on paper than what you'd see at 100m.

If you are set on an AR rifle in .308 I would recommend sticking with a factory built rifle from a reputable company. There have been a couple of LMT MWS rifles in the EE for good prices - well worth looking at. If you do, don't get wrapped up in the chromed lined v. SS barrel differences. My experience with a chromed lined LMT barrel is very good.

There is nothing wrong with sticking to .223 however as your current AR should be able to handle 300m with no problems.
.223 is a very forgiving and versatile cartridge to load for - you might want to look into getting into handloading.
