Want to cast

I am trying to get all the info and items needed to cast my own bullets. I am wondering if there is anybody in the devon or edmonton area that has a source they are willing to share or perhas some fresh wheel weights they would part with for some cash. I havent had the time to drop in to any places aside from the tire department at cost-co tonight. Costco " puts it all on a pallet and sends it to someone" and no they wont give nor sell them. Any hints or tips would be really appreciated.
 
The Schuetzen guys at the Spruce Grove range will be a good source of info for you. They will likely be running their winter league come Nov or Dec, they run it on a Sunday. Ask around out there and you can learn a lot about it.
 
picked up approx 40 lbs of wheel weights off kijiji then swung by walmart was givin everything the had and told they would call me in a few weeks when they have more. So at the moment it looks like Iam sitting with about 150 or so pounds of un processed wheel weights. Going to get a cast iron pot tomorrow and giver heck over the next few days to see what I end up with.

Yer off to a good start.

Me?, just two smelts ahead of you.

Set up upwind of them stinky, toxic fumes ... and cull the zink afore the melting. A slow rise to melt temp. will let you skim off any that you missed, before they too melt and ruin the whole batch.

Having a ball with these(almost)free bullets .... the antique Webley just loves 'em.
 
Remove ZINC (Zn), rubber, plastic, steel(not critical), flux with wax or charring wood and stir well BEFORE you skim; since you could lose tin and antimony otherwise. Some add a little tin if they have it. WW only has about 1/2% tin. BEWARE any water or moisture, it can cause a steam explosion. Wear glasses, apron, heavy clothing and have fun safely.
 
went through a windsheild washer jug full of weights and ended up with 6 muffin tin ingots after sorting out all the Fe and zinc I could recognize. I think I need a couple more goes to get this down but I kinda figured with a slow heat up temp if and zinc was missed it should "float " and have time to get it off. I picked up a lyman lube sizer 4500 with electric furnace today , now Iam just waiting for the 405 rn fp mold to arrive.
 
Since you have a 4500 you should have a hole in the base of yours to insert the heater that they sell. Bought mine state side for about 30 bucks. For now you can just get a piece of tin/metal bigger than the base of the lubesizer and put a cloths iron on it to heat it up. You will have to regulate the iron so as not to get it to hot, just warm to the touch on the body of the 4500 should be enough.

I made a PID controller that you set the exact temp you want it, regulates the heater, works like a charm. Tried it first on an old pos 10lb lee pot then bought a different thermocouple for the lyman 4500 and one for my RCBS 20 lb Pot. Works excellent on hollow point bullet molds to keep the temp regulated far and above the temp setting on the pot itself.

Since I made this post I have upgraded the SSR to a 25 amp version just to be safe and run some bigger equipment off of it.
 
Lyman also makes a heater that lays flat under the luber, it is drilled and tapped for many different sizers, the Lyman, RCBS and the Star, it does not have any heat control.

X2 on that.
If you look at the lymane website it’s called a universal lube heater.
It is simple to use and you can modify it by connecting it to a light dimmer switch/knob.
Connect it to A simple knob from home depot and you can adjust the heat on it.
 
Be sure to read the 2nd Sticky at the top of this forum with advise on the safe melting and use of wheel weights .... the potential dangers are very real and unforgiving.
 
Try a hair dryer(on cylinder) to soften lube. Takes about 5 min in a cool basement, but may be more difficult with very hard rifle lubes. A heat gun may be faster but beware the danger of wax fire.
 
cheap heater

i mounted a thin steel plate under the sizer, that is long enough in the back to place an old clothing iron directly on the plate. the temp control of the iron works fine
 
I have 2 1/2 tons of processed WW lead in 25lb bricks, I am sure I could part with one or two to get a newbie going. :D
