I am a little torn... I am looking at getting a Ruger 10/22, but I have seen 3 (plus a TC) that I like, but are all completely different.

1 - Ruger 10/22 International Stainless (full mannlicher style stock) - $465
2 - Ruger 10/22 Target (laminate stock and 0.920" forged barrel) - $429
3 - Ruger 10/22 Standard (Hogue stock, Butler Creek taper carbon fibre barrel with iron sights) - $529

(Lastly, I just saw the TC R55, seems pretty slick - $545)

Now, I wanted to stick with the Ruger as there are SO many parts, clips, etc. available, I could do anything with it. However, I do want it to perform reasonabley well for target shooting.

I have also seen on here that many of you buy the basic and pretty much throw everything but the action away...

I didn't throw anything away. Well, okay, I did but a Butler Creek folding stock. Anyways, I wouldn't mind loosening up the trigger but the gun works great the way it comes. If you don't plan on getting a folding stock get the youth model with a shorter barrel. If you do want flexiblity, get the carbine. I like short barrels :) .

Heres the photo of the 10/22 with the hogue stock and butler creek barrel...

For the $16 dollar difference between that pimped out 10/22 and the TC, it would be a no brainer for me...the TC for sure (even though I also like 10/22's and own a couple of them).

slicknick: yes it is...

I haven't been able to find much info on the butler creek barrel, actually one site calls it a plastic and not carbon fiber barrel...

I will have to handle some of these again... for some reason I am attracted to the International stainless... would love an "international" hogue stock.

Get the 10/22 international. I did!!

I had the same search you did which semi? After a couple off brands I found a deal here for an Int in mint condition with all VQ internals. Ive often considered changing out the barrel but the mannlicher stock looks and handles so well. As for accuracy all i do is plink anyways. But can hit a shotgun shell at 40 yrds seated on the grass no problem
Green mountain makes a tapered target barrel if you wanted to tune that and keep the stock, which by the way is in my opinon is the only nice looking 10/22 ruger produced.
Buy and enjoy it.

I am glad you still have that 10/22 i sold you:)

Don't get the Butler Creek Carbon Fiber barrel. It is crap. It's not actually carbon fiber but a plasticy material and your point of impact will change dramatically when the barrel heats up.

Volquartsen and Magnum Research make great carbon fiber barrels.

I had the chance to handle a T/C R-55 benchmark tonight at WSS. All I have to say is WOW! It is extremely well built and solid as a rock. Had I gotten the chance to see one in person before I bought my TVP, I would have gladly spent the extra money. Do yourself a favor and go take a look at one. As for the Browning, I hunted high and low. If you can find one, buy it too!

:)

Is that a heat shield on your 10/22 international?

Thanks for the info, it is matching the rest of the info I am getting on that...

Actually, I am not certain that I want a Ruger 10/22... it is on my list, but that list is all over the place right now (in ascending $ order):

Sportco 71A - neat one
Voere 2115 - also very nice
Ruger 10/22 International Stainless - really like the look
TC 22 Benchmark - on sale (blued heavey barrel)
TC 22 Classic Silver Lynx Stainless - really nice
Browning T-Bolt - like the straight pull
Izhmash 7-2KO - another interesting straight pull

Then I could always buy a "stock" Ruger 10/22 and get the hogue stock and a barrel and be done with it...

Is it just me, or is there SO much choice in 22... I want a few, not just one.

I've got a Voere 2115. Gets a lot of interest at the range and it's scary accurate. Came in second this week (using iron sights) in our 'Sunday Fun shoot'. I've only met one other person that had one, and they both had the same defect. The bolt handle will suddenly break off after 30 years or so during rapid fire.

+1 on the TCarms R-55 Benchmark

Solid build. Almost as accurate as my 54 match bolt gun with good ammo.

It cycles and is not too picky about ammo (cheap bulk ammo still
groups < 1 inch @ 50). If you don't want to or care about customizing,
then the R55 series is a no-brainer.

Steel receiver, threaded bull barrel (Benchmark), laminated stock which
doesn't need extra bedding, free floated stock.... VERY simple trigger
group and recoil system.

Someone inquired about the Benchmark models on sale at LeBarons for
$495. I don't think they have them any more. Too good to be true.

Second choice would be a 597 TVP provided the example you get
shoots. The quality control seems to be all over the place with these
and the 597 Yellow Jackets.

Add another vote for the T-Bolt, or... if your looking for an inexpensive semi try the Mossberg Plinker (http://www.frontiertaxidermy.com/html/mossberg2.html) or for an inexpensive and accurate bolt try the Savage Mk IIFV with accu-trigger.

If u are still looking at the 10/22 take a look at the Nordic AR22.

my .033 cents

The Gov'ment is looking to phase out the penny, so you will need to resubmit that reply with a monetary amount that is rounded to the nearest nickel... :)

I'm really not sure what I am going to get at this point... I'm still not sure if I want the straight pull or semi... just not a bolt. I'm going to look around this weekend, go to the gun show, look around more, and decide then...

Pc9, yep still have it. there is no way im getting rid of this one. Works great, looks great, everything great...lol.

As for the heat shield, I think the above statment explains it all, so why not customize er.... Its a choate snap ring model of a stock i had. Needed to inlet the stock slightly. Then i installed williams fire sights, see through receiver mounted rings and an old bushnell banner 4x1" to finnish it off.
